About This Job

The First Vice President (FVP), Commercial Underwriter is a senior-level position responsible for leading the underwriting and risk assessment process for complex commercial lending transactions. This role works closely with Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and Executive Leadership to evaluate creditworthiness, structure loan packages, and ensure adherence to the institution's risk appetite and regulatory guidelines. The FVP plays a key role in managing portfolio risk and supporting the growth of high-quality commercial loan assets.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs complex financial and collateral analyses including modeling, projection analyses, and cash flow analysis to evaluate repayment ability and overall credit quality; evaluates accounts receivable, inventory, equipment, and other working capital assets to determine advance rates, borrowing base availability, and overall collateral adequacy
  • Reviews and stress-tests collateral assumptions including borrowing base certificates, inventory appraisals, and field exam findings to support credit decisions; Deep understanding of collateral types and associated risks
  • Manages analysts through the underwriting process (CAM, Diligence); prepares and reviews CAMs and PICs before submission; tracks all items necessary to close a loan including collateral documentation and appraisal coordination
  • Prepares term sheets and reviews loan documents with focus on ABL-specific provisions (borrowing base mechanics, collateral monitoring covenants, dominion/control agreements, field exam triggers); coordinates boarding with additional bank units
  • Prescreens new business for appropriateness and structure; supports business development officers in pursuing and shaping ABL transactions
  • Trains and develops analysts with emphasis on ABL-specific technical skills and collateral analysis
  • Liaises between departments to gain buy-in for business plans, growth strategies, and transaction opportunities; assists in hiring
  • Assists in writing credit policy, guidelines, and key process development including underwriting standards, collateral eligibility criteria, and borrowing base templates
  • Represents the Bank at industry forums, conferences, and client meetings; travels as needed to execute on assigned duties
  • Recommends loans for approval to credit committee, presenting analyses that clearly articulate risk, structure rationale, and proposed mitigants
  • Leads group adherence to the management framework and compliance with all audit and review requirements including OCC, BDO, Internal Audit, ICR, and SOX review

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field required; MBA or advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial credit underwriting, including large/complex loan structures
  • Deep knowledge of financial statement analysis, loan structuring, collateral evaluation, and cash flow modeling
  • Strong understanding of regulatory guidelines (OCC, FDIC, Basel III) and internal risk-rating systems
  • Proven ability to communicate complex credit decisions clearly and persuasively to senior leadership
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Experience with portfolio management and risk monitoring tools is a plus
  • High proficiency in credit software platforms and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and PowerPoint)
