What is a dog?

Dogs are domesticated mammals that belong to the Canidae family and are scientifically known as Canis lupus familiaris. They have been bred by humans for thousands of years for companionship, work, and various tasks such as herding, hunting, and protection. Dogs are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and diverse range of breeds, each with unique characteristics and temperaments. As pets, they require proper care, training, and socialization to thrive in a human environment.

What are jobs that work with dogs?

Jobs that work with dogs include a variety of care positions, such as dog walker, dog groomer, kennel manager, shelter volunteer, and pet store worker. There are also more technical or specialized roles, such as a breeder, trainer, or veterinarian. The duties for these jobs vary significantly and range from entry-level work like washing and drying dogs at pet grooming stores to advanced tasks like researching dog behavior or developing pet medicine.

What are some common challenges faced by dog trainers when working with dogs of varying temperaments?

Dog trainers often encounter a wide range of canine personalities, from shy and anxious to energetic and assertive. Adapting training methods to suit each dog's temperament is crucial for effective results and safety. Trainers must be patient, observant, and skilled in positive reinforcement techniques, as well as able to communicate clearly with both dogs and their owners. Building trust with the animal and helping owners maintain consistency at home are essential components of overcoming these challenges.

Job description

We’re Crossbones Dog Academy, a positive-reinforcement dog training & daycare business in Providence. We’re hiring a full-time Dog Daycare Attendant to help run safe, fun playgroups, take great care of our clients’ dogs, and keep our space clean and welcoming.

This role requires open availability from 6:40AM to 6:30PM Monday through Friday. In return, you can count on having weekends, nights, and all federal holidays off.

This role is for someone who:

  • Genuinely enjoys working with both dogs and people.
  • Stays calm and observant in a busy, active environment.
  • Takes safety, cleanliness, and routines seriously.
  • Shows up on time, follows through, and notices what needs to be done without a lot of hand-holding.
  • Believes in (or is eager to learn) positive reinforcement and isn’t afraid of cleaning, walking, lifting, and other physical work.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Supervise dog playgroups indoors and outdoors, watching body language and group dynamics.
  • Use rewards and kind, clear management to guide dog behavior and gently redirect when needed.
  • Help with drop-off and pick-up on your scheduled shifts, including greeting clients, transitioning dogs between spaces, and handling transactions in our store.
  • Clean up messes, prep and serve meals and food-dispensing toys, and provide individual potty breaks and rest times.
  • Capture simple photos and short videos of dogs at play or in training, and draft short, upbeat captions for social media.
  • Share observations about dogs with the rest of the team so training and daycare stay on the same page.
  • Help keep our 8,000 square foot facility clean, organized, and safe for dogs, clients, and coworkers.

What it’s like to work here:

  • We’re a small, owner-operated business, not a corporate chain.
  • You’ll know the people you work for, and your ideas and observations will matter.
  • We value responsibility (safety, cleanliness, follow-through), working together (backing each other up and communicating honestly), and impact (using positive methods to make life better for dogs and their humans).
  • Expect real work, accountability, plenty of dog hair, and a team that actually cares.

What you bring:

  • At least 12 months of work history with management references; experience in dog daycare/kennels, vet clinics, grooming, paid shelter work, or fast-paced customer service is required.
  • Comfort handling dogs of all sizes and doing physical work (on your feet, cleaning, lifting, etc.).
  • Reliability, punctuality, and strong attendance.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive, team-focused attitude.
  • A genuine desire to be part of a team committed to personal and professional growth.

Key details:

  • Full-time weekday role (32–40 hours/week) with consistent hours.
  • No overnights, weekends, or federal holidays.
  • Competitive hourly pay, PTO, health and dental contributions, continuing education support, retirement match, free training classes, staff discounts, and opportunities to grow into lead or trainer roles (full details on our Careers page).
