What are the main challenges faced by professionals in dog transport, and how can they be managed?

One of the main challenges in dog transport is ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of dogs during travel, especially over long distances or when dealing with anxious animals. Professionals must be skilled in handling different breeds, recognizing signs of stress, and following health and legal regulations such as vaccination requirements and travel documentation. Successful dog transporters plan routes carefully, maintain open communication with pet owners, and work closely with veterinarians or animal care teams to address any issues that may arise during transit.

What is dog transport?

Dog transport refers to the service of safely moving dogs from one location to another, whether locally, nationally, or internationally. These services are commonly used by pet owners moving homes, breeders, animal shelters, or rescue organizations to ensure dogs travel comfortably and securely. Professional dog transporters are trained in animal care, understand regulations regarding pet travel, and often provide specialized vehicles equipped for animal safety. The process may include handling travel documentation, arranging for crate accommodations, and ensuring the well-being of the dogs during transit. Choosing a reputable dog transport service helps minimize stress for both the dogs and their owners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dog Transport Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dog Transport Specialist, you need a solid understanding of animal care, safe handling techniques, and a valid driver's license, often supported by experience or certification in animal transportation. Familiarity with transport vehicles, GPS navigation systems, and pet travel regulations is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help in managing animal behavior and reassuring pet owners. These competencies ensure the safe, stress-free transit of dogs and build trust with clients and animal welfare organizations.

About the Role
In this role, youโ€™ll spend your days walking dogs (often in small, friendly pack walks of up to 5 dogs), providing in-home pet care visits, and supporting petsโ€™ daily routinesโ€”meals, fresh water, and medications when needed. Youโ€™ll also represent our company in clientsโ€™ homes, so professionalism, dependability, and strong communication are essential.

  • Paid training and opportunities to grow with us

  • Mileage reimbursement (when using your personal vehicle)

  • Daily cell phone stipend for work-related use

  • Workersโ€™ compensation coverage for on-the-job injuries

  • Up to 40 hours of sick pay per year

  • Company vehicle provided for pack walks

Responsibilities

  • Walk dogs on 60-minute pack walks (up to 5 dogs) and individual walks as scheduled

  • Safely manage multiple dogs on leash; most are already in established packs, though occasionally you may introduce a new dog

  • Transport dogs to and from walk locations (company vans provided for pack walks)

  • Provide meals, water, and medications as needed

  • Send daily updates and photos to clients

  • Care for other pets tooโ€”cats, birds, even ducksโ€”during in-home visits

  • Maintain key control and follow company protocols for home access

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years or older

  • Hands-on experience with dogs (walking, shelter, vet, or training a plus)

  • A dependable, patient, and passionate animal lover

  • Valid driverโ€™s license and a clean driving record

  • A smartphone for scheduling, GPS, and sharing visit updates

  • Physically able to walk 4โ€“5 miles per day

  • Comfortable working independently and following client instructions

  • Responsible and trustworthy with keys and client privacy

  • Lives locally in West Los Angeles (or nearby) is a plus

  • Willing to complete Pet CPR/First Aid certification (weโ€™ll pay for it)

  • Must pass a background check

Why Youโ€™ll Love Working With Us

  • Be part of a trusted pet care company with 25+ years in West LA

  • Work outdoors, stay active, and spend your day surrounded by pets

  • Flexible, part-time schedule (2โ€“3 days per week)

  • Join a supportive, animal-loving team that treats pets like family
