Overview for a Yard Dog Driver

A Yard Dog Driver is responsible for safely and efficiently moving trailers within a warehouse yard, distribution center, or transportation hub. This role ensures that trailers are positioned correctly for loading and unloading, supports dock operations, and helps maintain an organized and productive yard environment.
Key Responsibilities for a Yard Dog Driver
  • Move trailers to and from dock doors, staging areas, and parking spots using a yard truck/spotter truck
  • Perform pre trip and post trip inspections on yard trucks and trailers
  • Communicate with warehouse staff, dispatchers, and supervisors to coordinate trailer movements
  • Maintain accurate trailer logs, yard maps, and move records
  • Ensure trailers are properly chocked, secured, and aligned at dock doors
  • Monitor yard conditions and report hazards, equipment issues, or safety concerns
  • Assist with basic trailer checks such as verifying seal numbers, checking for damage, or confirming load status
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site procedures
  • Support smooth yard flow during peak periods or tight schedules
Skills & Qualifications for a Yard Dog Driver
  • Experience operating a yard truck, hostler, or tractor trailer preferred
  • Ability to maneuver trailers in tight spaces with precision
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Basic understanding of warehouse or transportation operations
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
  • Attention to detail and commitment to safety
Physical Requirements for a Yard Dog Driver
  • Ability to climb in and out of yard trucks frequently
  • Ability to lift, bend, and perform tasks around trailers and docks
  • Comfortable working on foot around moving equipment
Typical Work Environment for a Yard Dog Driver
  • Fast paced yard or warehouse setting
  • Outdoor work with exposure to weather
  • 1st shift: 8:00AM-5:00PM $23.00 per hour
  • 2nd Shift: 5:00PM-2:00AM $24.00 per hour
