Do 178C and DO-254 are both critical standards in aerospace certification, focusing on different aspects: software versus hardware. Professionals working with Do 178C specialize in software safety and certification, while those with DO-254 expertise focus on hardware safety. Both roles require understanding of certification processes and safety standards, but their scope differs in the type of systems they certify.

What is DO-178C?

DO-178C is an international standard that provides guidelines for the development of airborne software systems. It is widely used in the aviation industry to ensure that software installed in aircraft meets stringent safety and reliability requirements. The standard defines objectives for software development, verification, configuration management, and quality assurance, and it is often required for software certification by aviation authorities such as the FAA and EASA. Compliance with DO-178C is critical for manufacturers and suppliers developing software for commercial, military, or private aircraft.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced aerospace engineers working on certification and safety compliance for DO-178C, especially in senior or lead roles, can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually. These roles often require advanced certifications, extensive industry experience, and expertise in avionics software development and verification processes.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A Do 178C certification specialist or aerospace compliance engineer can earn around $10,000 per month, especially with experience in aviation safety standards and certification processes. These roles often require specialized training and knowledge of aerospace regulations but do not necessarily require a traditional college degree.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DO-178C Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a DO-178C Software Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, embedded systems, and a thorough understanding of safety-critical software standards, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools like requirements management systems (e.g., DOORS), static code analyzers, configuration management tools, and knowledge of the DO-178C standard is essential, along with relevant certifications. Attention to detail, strong documentation skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring compliance and facilitating teamwork. These abilities are vital for developing reliable, certifiable software that meets stringent aviation safety regulations.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior aerospace engineers working on certification and compliance for DO-178C, especially those in leadership roles or with extensive experience, can earn $300,000 or more annually. High salaries are often associated with specialized skills, advanced certifications, and working in high-demand sectors such as aerospace or defense industries.

What are the main challenges faced by engineers working with DO-178C compliance in avionics software development?

Engineers working with DO-178C often encounter challenges related to rigorous documentation, traceability, and strict verification requirements. Ensuring every software requirement is thoroughly tested and traceable through all stages of development can be time-consuming and detail-oriented. Additionally, coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as systems engineers, quality assurance, and certification authorities—is essential for successful compliance. Familiarity with specialized tools and a proactive approach to communication can help overcome these challenges and contribute to a smoother certification process.

Job description

Amazon Prime Air is seeking a Sr. Systems Development Engineer to serve as our internal DO-178C Designated Engineering Representative (DER) and certification process authority for the Drone Guidance, Navigation & Controls (GNC) software team. This is an individual contributor role with organization-wide impact - you will define the certification strategy, build the DO-178C processes from the ground up, and serve as the primary technical interface with the FAA and DERs for all software certification activities.
This role is uniquely dual-natured: you must be a seasoned software developer with hands-on embedded systems experience and a recognized expert in DO-178C certification processes

You will own the certification lifecycle end-to-end - from establishing the Software Planning and Assurance processes that satisfy SOI-1 through executing and leading SOI-2, SOI-3, SOI-4, and Conformity Audits.
Your impact extends across all Software teams. You will define standards of engineering and certification excellence at the organization level, influence Prime Air's broader airworthiness strategy, and guide the career growth of senior technical talent across the program.
Key job responsibilities
Own DO-178C certification strategy for Prime Air software (specifically at DAL C and DAL D), defining the end-to-end software lifecycle approach from planning through Software Accomplishment Summary (SAS) and final certification
Develop and establish DO-178C processes that satisfy all planning objectives required for SOI-1, including authoring and owning the Plan for Software Aspects of Certification (PSAC), Software Development Plan (SDP), Software Verification Plan (SVP), Software Configuration Management Plan (SCMP), and Software Quality Assurance Plan (SQAP)
Lead all four Stages of Involvement (SOI) audits - SOI-1 (Planning), SOI-2 (Development), SOI-3 (Verification/Test), and SOI-4 (Final), serving as the primary technical representative to the FAA or DER during each stage
Serve as Auditor for software certification activities, making findings of compliance based on regulatory objectives laid out for Drone certification.
Define and enforce process rigor based on the DAL across the software lifecycle, ensuring the correct number of objectives and independence requirements are satisfied for each DAL level per DO-178C
Establish software structural coverage standards, defining tooling, automation, and reporting processes that demonstrate compliance to certification authorities.
Build and maintain requirements traceability infrastructure from system-level requirements through HLRs, LLRs, source code, and test cases using tools such as Jama, ensuring bidirectional traceability satisfies DO-178C objectives
Define tool qualification strategy under DO-330 for all software development and verification tools used in the DO-178C lifecycle, including qualification level determination and Tool Qualification Plans (TQPs)
Mentor and develop senior engineers in DO-178C processes, certification audit preparation, and safety-critical software development practices, guiding their career growth toward certification expertise
Influence organization-level technical strategy for airworthiness, certification, and safety-critical software development across Amazon Prime Air, producing exemplary written artifacts that create alignment with technical and non-technical audiences at the VP level
Proactively identify and resolve certification risks across the software lifecycle, escalating to leadership with clear mitigation plans and communicating certification status clearly to senior leadership and the FAA
