Purpose

Performs underwater inspection, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation activities on marine and waterfront infrastructure. This position supports projects involving bridges, dams, ports, pipelines, vessels, docks, piers, and other submerged structures. The role is responsible for executing safe and efficient diving operations while providing accurate inspection findings and supporting marine activities in compliance with regulatory and company safety standards.


Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture in compliance with OSHA, ADCI, and company diving standards.
  • Participate in pre-dive planning, job hazard analyses, safety briefings, and post-dive debriefings.
  • Provide guidance and support to dive tenders and less experienced dive team members.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, vessel crews, and clients to ensure successful project execution.
  • Assist in training and mentoring team members on diving procedures, equipment usage, and inspection methodologies.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Perform underwater inspections of bridges, piers, pylons and marine structures, pipelines, waterfront facilities, vessels, dams, and related infrastructure.
  • Utilize underwater video, photography, sonar, and inspection equipment to evaluate submerged assets and document conditions.
  • Prepare clear and accurate field reports, inspection documentation, dive logs, and project records.
  • Maintain, inspect, and troubleshoot diving equipment and support systems to ensure operational readiness.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and maintain readiness for diving operations.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control objectives by adhering to project specifications and company standards.

 

Do the Work

  • Conduct surface-supplied and other commercial diving operations in accordance with approved dive plans.
  • Perform visual, tactile, and instrument-assisted underwater inspections.
  • Execute underwater maintenance tasks.
  • Perform underwater cutting, rigging, and lifting activities as qualified.
  • Operate hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and specialized inspection tools.
  • Monitor underwater conditions and communicate findings to dive supervisors and project teams.
  • Perform vessel, barge, and marine support activities as required.
  • Execute marine salvage and hazardous material (hazmat) recovery.
  • Travel to project sites and work varying schedules, including nights, weekends, and extended deployments.

Qualifications
  • At least 18 years old with High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an accredited commercial or military diving school required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of commercial diving experience preferred.
  • Experience conducting underwater inspections of bridges, dams, pipelines, marine structures, or waterfront facilities preferred.
  • Experience supporting marine construction projects, including pile installation, demolition, rehabilitation, rigging, or concrete placement preferred.
  • Experience working from vessels, barges, and marine construction platforms preferred.
  • Valid Commercial Diving Certification required.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications required.
  • ADCI Diver Certification preferred.
  • NDT certifications (VT, UT, MT, PT) preferred.
  • TWIC card and valid driver's license preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA commercial diving regulations and industry safety standards.
  • Ability to operate underwater inspection equipment, cameras, sonar systems, and related technology.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency in preparing inspection reports and maintaining project records.
  • Familiarity with marine construction equipment, rigging practices, and diving support systems.

Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Primarily outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards in underwater, marine, waterfront, and industrial environments.
  • Must meet physical and medical requirements for commercial diving by undergoing a rigorous physical and hyperbaric medical examination.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, marine vessels, heavy equipment, and changing environmental conditions.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include swimming, diving, walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, low-visibility conditions, varying water depths, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
