Job description
Supervised by the Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion, the Assistant Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion will serve as a critical leader in developing strong interpersonal relationships with students to encourage an inclusive and supportive environment for students from a variety of backgrounds. The Assistant Director will offer direct student support by managing the daily administrative operations for the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, coordinate the STRIDE Peer Leader Program, provide leadership on the Center's LGBTQIA+ and/or First Generation Student portfolio, act as a frontline supervisor to student staff and foster a welcoming environment in each of the department's spaces. Through strategic and innovative outreach efforts, this position is tasked with raising the visibility of inclusive community spaces and programs while connecting students to campus resources.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Programming & Event Management
- Develop a strategic and innovative programmatic plan for the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion based on observable student needs, departmental priorities and grounded in college student development.
- Lead the planning and coordination of the Center's signature events to strengthen community for all students including orientation events, Wildcat Weekend, and celebrations of the diverse identities reflected on campus.
- Event management for the STRIDE Program (a peer leader program that supports the campus transition of incoming students). This includes the implementation of Peer Mentor training in preparation for the STRIDE Pre-Orientation Program for incoming students (peer mentees) and families, semester programming and check-ins with peer mentees and peer mentors, and the End-of-the-Year Celebrations.
- Collaborate with key Student Life stakeholders on events such as Civic Engagement, Student Activities, Davidson Outdoors Program, International Student Engagement, Chaplains Office, Career Development, Academic Access and Disability Resources, Residence Life and Student Health and Wellbeing.
- In collaboration and oversight by the Director, design and facilitate workshops on a variety of topics for the campus.
Student Supervision, Advising and Support
- In collaboration with the Director, serve as the functional supervisor for 6-8 student staff. This includes: creating staff schedules, advising program development, facilitating professional development, performance evaluation, management of bi-weekly timecard approvals, leading staff meetings and team building activities.
- Advise a group of 20-35 STRIDE (Students Together Reaching Individual Development and Education) Program Peer Mentors. This includes recruitment and training, holding regular meetings, ongoing leadership development, event planning and offering performance feedback. Advising also includes regular check-ins and relationship building with 40-60 first-year/transfer student participants (Peer Mentees) as they navigate their transition to Davidson.
- Develop strong interpersonal relationships with students while connecting them to campus resources as needed. This may include being available to students by offering drop-in hours, appointments or hosting group discussions.
- In collaboration with the Director, serve as a primary contact for first generation college students and take the lead on initiatives, programs and resources that support their development and experiences on campus.
Center Administration & Operations
- Create a welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors at the Center and its additional campus community spaces by advising them of campus resources.
- Support the Center staff with financial transactions and budget management: purchasing, vendor contract processing, travel arrangements, monthly credit card statement reconciliations, reports, etc.
- Serve as the secondary administrative manager for room reservation requests for the Center's multiple spaces.
- Assist the Administrative Assistant with coordinating meetings and scheduling events.
- Assist the Administrative Assistant with monitoring and maintaining inventory of office supplies and kitchen facilities.
Outreach, Communication & Resources
- Develop and implement a marketing and communication plan that raises the visibility of diversity, equity, and inclusion spaces, programs and resources.
- Design materials to publicize events and resources with attention to consistent messaging for the Center's mission through programs, campaigns, resource guides, event fliers, office banners etc.
- Manage social media and technology platforms for the Center by providing frequent updates on events and resources.
- Track campus community engagement with the Center's multiple spaces.
- Coordinate and assist with updates to the Center's website and create forms, evaluations etc. for varying events and projects.
