What is a distribution warehouse?

A distribution warehouse is a specialized facility where goods and products are received, stored, and then shipped out to retailers, wholesalers, or customers. These warehouses play a crucial role in the supply chain by organizing inventory, processing orders, and ensuring timely delivery. Distribution warehouses often use technology and automation to efficiently handle large volumes of goods, making them essential for businesses involved in logistics and e-commerce. They differ from traditional storage warehouses by focusing more on the rapid movement and distribution of products rather than long-term storage.

What are some common challenges faced in a distribution warehouse role and how can they be managed?

Working in a distribution warehouse often involves handling tight deadlines, managing high volumes of inventory, and adapting to shifting priorities. Team members may face challenges such as maintaining accuracy during busy periods, ensuring safety while operating machinery, and collaborating efficiently with other departments like shipping and receiving. These challenges can be managed by following established processes, using technology for inventory tracking, and participating in regular safety and communication training. Teamwork and flexibility are key to successfully navigating the fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a distribution warehouse worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Distribution Warehouse Worker, you need basic math and literacy skills, physical stamina, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, pallet jacks, and forklifts—sometimes requiring certification—is typically needed. Strong teamwork, time management, and reliability are standout soft skills in this position. These abilities ensure efficient operations, accurate order fulfillment, and a safe work environment within the warehouse.

Job description

We here at the Gustave A Larson Company are looking our next team member to join us as a Warehouse Forklift Attendant. What qualities are we looking for?

We are an HVAC/R wholesale distributor throughout the Midwest and the Mountain States, including our American Fork (Utah County) location. We thrive on being customer service oriented, being nimble, balancing multiple responsibilities, and developing positive relationships with our teams to work together to get the job done.

We need people who have prior experience driving lift equipment and using scanner technology in a distribution warehouse

  • Have Attention to Detail – You will assist the warehouse manager in the operation of the daily warehouse duties which includes: Operating Forklifts (sit down, Reach Trucks, Order Pickers, etc), pulling product for Will Calls, organizing truck loads to their proper locations when trucks are received, using RF scanning technology for locating/picking product, and stocking small parts as needed.
  • Customer Focused – we are passionate about serving all of our customers, including dealers, business owners and large HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration) companies and consolidators. We meet customers’ needs by delivering on our promises at the Counter in our locations. We do this by being present and in person with our customers and by pulling and fulfilling orders quickly and correctly.

  • Sense of Urgency – our customers come first, both internal and external. That’s part of the team spirit, to operate and react quickly. We are proactive and self-motivated.
  • We learn & understand the entire business - part of our training program involves learning and understanding from the beginning how our business operates - you will spend time initially learning the warehouse systems and forklifts, but also learn what we expect from customer service, wills calls, and supporting the entire branch organization so you have a solid foundation in your role.
