About the Opportunity
This is an open position with Jersey Central Power & Light, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.
The successful candidate can anticipate a salary within the following range pending education, experience, and equity.
The successful candidate will be hired within this range $139,800 - $167,760, based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity. Compensation may vary depending on job-related knowledge, geographic location, and overall candidate profile.
Standardized Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety, strengthening the commitment to safety throughout the Substation staff.
  • Coordinate and supervise the daily activities of Distribution Techs, administrative support, and bargaining unit personnel by making decisions guided by policies, procedures, and business plan which help to drive continuous improvement across the business unit and FirstEnergy.
  • Conduct applicant interviews, manage employees' performance to achieve established objectives, perform mid-year and year-end performance reviews with employees, and provide coaching on an ongoing basis.
  • Understand and manage work according to business needs, departmental budget, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify capital solutions and work with Business Services to change orders from O&M to capital. Review capital orders to ensure correct time, material and invoice charging.
  • Continually seek opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and broaden/deepen relationships; anticipate customers' needs and propose alternative solutions when necessary.
  • Identify and coordinate the specific construction and maintenance work activities and manpower required to complete a work request in compliance with company standards and legal/regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate work request activity with other customers, contractors, internal entities and line department sections (including contacts beyond normal work hours, as appropriate), and provides status updates when requested.
  • Know how to call in UG Utility locates (i.e., OUPS, NJ ONE CALL, MISO Utility Tickets)
  • Submit switching requests to the Distribution Control Center
  • Submit requests for traffic control
  • Submit requests for outages in the Outage Management Database (reverse IVR)
  • Track completion of Regulatory and BES maintenance for Substations and Controls using Cascade and Excel. Provide regular updates to ensure State and BES regulatory commitments are fulfilled.
  • Manage the JC Substations Capital Spare Equipment Inventory utilizing Excel and Cascade to maintain an updated record of spare equipment.
  • Manage Cascade data and lead effort to maintain accurate Cascade data, including adding, modifying, and deleting equipment in Cascade, updating Cascade BES information, conducting routine audits of Cascade data, and providing Cascade training and support.
  • Lead the monthly process of assembling and reviewing of Controls and Substation closed orders in Cascade to ensure data integrity.
  • Monitoring the backlog of work and section productivity and providing management with weekly updates on progress.
  • Define, coordinate and assure the availability of the materials, equipment, special tools, and permits needed to establish work commitment dates and takes steps to expedite delivery when necessary and /or practical.
  • Maintain a firm two-week plan of section activities, and a one month projection of anticipated future activities providing management with a daily work plan and job contingency strategy. Monitor the backlog of work and section productivity and provide management with weekly updates on progress.
  • Support staff with the closing of job packets, by providing assistance with reviewing and updating designs to reflect actual construction, making certain that all materials are properly issued or credited as needed. Assists in reviewing and updating designs to reflect actual construction, making certain post construction job design can be utilized to update company mapping systems.
  • Review completed field prints and associated material list for accuracy and job packet completeness prior to job close out.
  • Set priorities for the team to ensure task completion; coordinate work activities with other supervisors and/or managers.
  • Analyze complex issues and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Lead, educate, and direct others to improve team effectiveness and communicate results/recommendations to varying audiences.
  • Encourage open, honest, direct, and ongoing conversation amongst team members.
  • Actively seek and share own knowledge of industry trends, competitors, etc. that affect the Business Unit and/or FirstEnergy Corp.
  • Implement improvement ideas related to work processes with the span of control.
  • Actively seek ways to build, challenge and add value within the scope of assignments. Develop high-level solutions for the most complex, technical assignments. Integrate broad, strategic concepts.
  • Promote a sense of urgency in the team for reaching goals and meeting deadlines, and provide strategic direction.
  • Understand the impact of change across current span of responsibility, as well as across multiple areas of our organization (i.e. operating companies).
  • Provide assistance during emergencies and storm-related activities and travel to various off-site locations as well as FirstEnergy office locations, training facilities and customer sites, when requested.
  • Provide assistance and support during absence of support staff, Supervisor, and/or Manager.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and 4 years of related work experience is required; OR Associate's degree in related discipline and 8 years of related work experience is required; OR High School Diploma (or GED) and 10 years of related work experience is required. Related work experience is knowledge of construction and maintenance practices, procedures, work methods, materials, equipment and tools which would be used to determine the resources necessary to perform construction and maintenance work activities.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to lead initiatives and change implementation.
  • Awareness of National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret work requests, engineering drawings, schematics, equipment instruction manuals and procedures to develop accurate work plans.
  • Working knowledge of the purpose, function, and operating characteristics of equipment and systems, (i.e. substation, overhead lines, underground lines), as well as working knowledge of construction methods, maintenance practices, service practices, standards and procedures.
  • Skill in the development, collection, organization, and analysis of information from a variety of sources to compile and monitor reports (i.e., POFU, ESSS, WMI, etc.), providing information on backlog and productivity.
  • Must possess superior analytical skills and be able to effectively work with all levels of employees, as well as with customers, contractors and the general public, in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of residential, commercial and utility electrical distribution and control systems.
  • Full proficiency with PC software applications including Microsoft Office, (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.) and Outlook, along with knowledge of SAP, geographical information system (GIS), customer request work scheduling (CREWS), FEWS, FWRD, FLEX, OMA, OMS, computer aided drafting (CAD/AutoCAD) and Energy Delivery Outage Application.
  • Ability to understand and apply knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Understand the Company's Accident Prevention Handbook and apply this to safety in the workplace.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work independently or in a team environment, to manage, organize and prioritize work and ultimately meet strict deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve problems on projects and/or processes.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to multi-task with competing priorities, provide both internal and external quality customer service, and demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess leadership qualities that allow one to provide effective guidance to others, coach others in effective decision-making and facilitate meetings.
  • Must have a personal vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required, possessing a valid driver's license.
