Job description

SUMMARY

The Distribution Assistant Manager supports the Distribution Manager in overseeing the daily operations of Goodwill Industries of North Louisiana’s distribution activities including warehouse operations, salvage processing, transportation logistics, and Attended Donation Centers (ADCs).

The Distribution Assistant Manager ensures daily workflow coordination, staffing coverage, operational safety, and efficient movement of donated goods throughout the distribution system.

Distribution Manager

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Daily Operations Leadership

  1. Oversees the daily operations of the warehouse, transportation routes, and Attended Donation Centers (ADCs).
  2. Supervises and assigns tasks to salvage, warehouse, transportation, and ADC employees to ensure efficient workflow.
  3. Conducts daily operational huddles and team meetings to communicate priorities, safety reminders, and performance expectations.
  4. Ensures distribution operations are adequately staffed and work schedules are maintained within approved labor budgets.

Workforce Supervision & Development

  1. Conducts initial hiring interviews for operational staff in coordination with the Distribution Manager.
  2. Provides coaching, training, and corrective guidance to distribution employees in collaboration with Human Resources when necessary.
  3. Ensures employees are properly trained on safety procedures, operational processes, equipment operation, and organizational policies.
  4. Coordinates volunteer and community service worker placement within the warehouse as appropriate.

Warehouse & Salvage Operations

  1. Oversees daily warehouse salvage processing including sorting, staging, and loading salvage materials.
  2. Ensures salvage bales and pallets are properly weighed, staged, and documented.
  3. Maintains organized warehouse zones and ensures proper rotation of materials and products.
  4. Ensures stores receive supplies and materials accurately and on schedule.

Attended Donation Center Operations

  1. Ensures donation centers are properly staffed, organized, and supplied.
  2. Conducts regular audits of ADC sites to ensure compliance with operational standards.
  3. Coordinates training and retraining of Donation Attendants on procedures, safety, and donor service standards.
  4. Maintains donation logs and operational reports related to ADC performance.

Transportation Operations

  1. Develops and maintains daily transportation schedules to ensure timely servicing of stores, donation centers, and collection points.
  2. Generates transportation route sheets and coordinates delivery schedules.
  3. Monitors vehicle tracking systems to ensure drivers remain on route and follow safety expectations.
  4. Maintains driver compliance records including DOT files, inspections, and training documentation.

Safety & Security

  1. Ensures safety procedures are followed across warehouse, transportation, and ADC operations.
  2. Serves as or ensures the presence of a Safety Advocate for distribution operations and ensures completion of required safety drills and inspections.
  3. Reports accidents, incidents, safety hazards, or equipment issues immediately to the Distribution Manager.
  4. Ensures proper use of PPE and safe handling of merchandise and equipment.

Reporting & Administration

  1. Maintains operational records including donation logs, transportation reports, salvage documentation, and safety records.
  2. Maintains confidentiality of employee and operational information.
  3. Prepares payroll submissions and employee schedules within approved labor budgets.

Other Duties

  1. Performs operational duties as needed to support distribution functions, including assisting in warehouse operations, transportation routes, or donation center activities during staffing shortages or operational needs.
  2. Maintains a professional appearance and positive leadership presence.
  3. Arrives to work on time and ensures consistent attendance and reliability.

Employees must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods in a warehouse environment
  • Lift, move, and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and team lift up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb when performing warehouse duties
  • Operate warehouse equipment including pallet jacks and forklifts
  • Enter and exit company vehicles and travel between warehouse, donation centers, and operational sites as needed

Employees may be exposed to:

  • Moving mechanical parts
  • Dust, airborne particles, or recycled materials
  • Outdoor weather conditions when visiting Attended Donation Centers (ADCs) or assisting with transportation operations
  • Moderate to loud noise levels from warehouse equipment

The primary work environment is:

An office located within a warehouse or distribution environment with active equipment and material handling operations. The role may also include time spent assisting with warehouse operations, transportation activities, or visiting Attended Donation Centers (ADCs).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED and a minimum of three (3) years of warehouse, logistics, recycling, or distribution experience, including at least one (1) year of supervisory or team lead experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Class D or Class A Louisiana driver’s license and proof of personal automobile insurance. Employee must have reliable transportation or access to a vehicle available for operational site visits and emergency response. Forklift certification required or must be obtained within three (3) months of hire.

Screenings: A background screening, driving record check, and drug test will be completed as a condition of employment. Must pass DOT physical.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of warehouse, logistics, and distribution operations including the movement, staging, and storage of materials.
  • Understanding of donation processing and salvage flow
  • Ability to supervise operational teams
  • Knowledge of warehouse safety practices including OSHA standards, PPE requirements, and safe operation of equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, balers, and compactors.
  • Ability to identify and properly handle regulated or hazardous materials such as batteries, chemicals, electronics, and other restricted items.
  • Ability to coordinate workflow across warehouse, salvage, transportation, and donation center operations to maintain efficient movement of donated goods.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise, coach, and motivate team members in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Ability to coordinate transportation schedules
  • Ability to monitor productivity and operational efficiency
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to respond to operational issues quickly
  • Basic computer skills including email, spreadsheets, and internal reporting systems used to track operations and shipments.
