What is a distribution designer?

Distribution Designers are professionals who plan and design electrical power distribution systems. They create layouts for power lines, transformers, and other equipment to ensure reliable electricity delivery to homes, businesses, and other facilities. Their work involves analyzing site conditions, following safety regulations, and coordinating with engineers, utility companies, and construction teams. Distribution Designers play a crucial role in modern infrastructure by making sure electrical systems are efficient, safe, and meet regulatory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a distribution designer?

To thrive as a Distribution Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical distribution systems, technical drawing skills, and typically an associate's or bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software, GIS mapping tools, and familiarity with relevant industry standards such as the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in collaborating with clients, engineers, and field crews. These competencies ensure the accurate and safe design of electrical distribution networks, supporting reliable power delivery and project efficiency.

What are some common challenges distribution designers face when coordinating with field crews and project managers?

Distribution Designers often coordinate closely with field crews and project managers to ensure that electrical distribution plans are practical and meet project requirements. A common challenge is translating technical designs into actionable steps that field crews can execute, especially when unexpected site conditions arise. Communication is key, as designers must clearly convey design intent and quickly adapt plans based on feedback from the field. Successful Distribution Designers are proactive in addressing issues and adept at collaborating with multiple stakeholders to keep projects on track.

What is the difference between Distribution Designer vs Distribution Engineer?

Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding design roles in power distributionUnderstanding engineering responsibilities in distribution projects

Distribution Designers focus on creating and planning electrical distribution layouts, ensuring efficient and compliant designs. Distribution Engineers often oversee the implementation, analysis, and optimization of these systems, with a broader engineering scope. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, but their focus differs from planning to engineering execution.

What do distribution designers do?

Distribution designers plan and develop electrical distribution systems, including the layout of power lines, substations, and related infrastructure. They analyze site conditions, ensure compliance with safety standards, and use design software such as AutoCAD or GIS tools to create detailed plans. Their work supports the reliable delivery of electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

Meade

Full-time

Job description

Meade is a full-service design firm specializing in innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions for data centers, cloud providers, and large-scale construction projects. Our team of expert engineers, designers, and consultants is dedicated to delivering high-quality, reliable, and sustainable solutions that drive the industry forward.

At Meade, we foster a collaborative and dynamic work environment where creativity, technical excellence, and professional growth are at the forefront. We take pride in our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and superior service-values that not only define our projects but also shape our workplace culture.

If you're looking to be part of a company that values expertise, teamwork, and cutting-edge design, we'd love to hear from you!

***This is a physical infrastructure design role — not software or IT networking. You'll design the cabling, pathways, and telecom rooms that data centers and mission-critical buildings run on: fiber/copper backbone routing, rack elevations, conduit systems, and construction drawings in Revit. Think structured cabling and building infrastructure design, not network administration or coding.***

Job Description:

Meade is seeking an RCDD-certified Senior ICT Infrastructure Design Engineer (Low Voltage) to join our Engineering team. This is a specialized role focused on the design of network infrastructure and structured cabling systems for mission critical and data center projects. This position will play a key role in delivering high-quality designs for complex projects while continuing to build technical expertise in a niche, high-demand discipline.

The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in network architecture and structured cabling systems.

Job Duties:

Network Design & Architecture

  • Design ICT and network infrastructure systems, including structured cabling (fiber and copper) and telecommunications pathways.
  • Develop LAN/WAN topology diagrams, logical network layouts, and physical infrastructure design, cable routing, and pathway layouts.
  • Produce detailed deliverables including:
    • Construction drawings
    • Cable routing and pathway layouts
    • Equipment schedules and specifications
    • Telecommunications room layouts and rack elevations
  • Design passive infrastructure including fiber backbone systems, copper cabling, and cross-connect/ODF configurations.
  • Design Service Entrance Facility (SEF) infrastructure, including fiber vault placement, underground conduit stub-outs, and coordination of carrier incoming fiber pathways.
  • Develop outside plant (OSP) designs including underground conduit systems, pull boxes, handholes, and site conduit routing in coordination with civil and electrical disciplines.
  • Apply industry standards (BICSI, TIA/EIA, ANSI) to ensure compliant and scalable designs.

Adjacent Systems Integration

  • Support the design and coordination of low-voltage systems, including:
    • Audiovisual (AV) systems
    • Security (CCTV, access control)
    • Wireless infrastructure
  • Ensure these systems are effectively integrated into overall network and ICT infrastructure design.

Data Center Design

  • Contribute to the design of data center infrastructure systems for enterprise, colocation, and mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop data hall layouts, rack plans, and cable management strategies.
  • Support design of MDA, HDA, and EDA environments, including backbone and horizontal distribution systems.
  • Incorporate considerations such as hot/cold aisle containment and scalability.
  • Assist in preparing construction documentation for fit-outs, upgrades, and new builds.
  • Coordinate ICT systems with electrical, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines.

Documentation & Software

  • Prepare all design drawings and deliverables using the Autodesk software suite, including Revit (MEP).
  • Develop BIM-coordinated ICT models for design coordination and clash detection workflows.
  • Produce specifications, design reports, bills of materials, and commissioning documentation.
  • Maintain accurate version control, project registers, and quality records throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Participation

  • Contribute to design review meetings, site visits, and client workshops under the direction of the project engineer.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and project stakeholders to resolve design challenges.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and subcontractors during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Assist in responding to RFIs and reviewing shop drawings and contractor submittals.
  • Execute assigned design tasks independently within defined scope.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in ICT/structured cabling design, or network infrastructure design.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) certification required — this is not a software/IT networking position.
  • Knowledge of network architecture and infrastructure design principles.
  • Experience with or exposure to data center environments.
  • Proficiency in Revit/AutoCAD, BICSI, TIA/EIA, construction drawings, rack elevations.
  • Proficiency Microsoft Office products, especially excel.
  • Working knowledge of structured cabling systems (fiber and copper), telecommunications spaces and pathways, and BICSI, TIA/EIA standards (including TIA-568).
  • Ability to work in a team environment with Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate, and coordinated design documentation.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills.
  • Communication skills both written and verbal are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on data center projects including hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise-scale facilities.
  • Familiarity with TIA-942 and BICSI TDMM, Uptime Institute Tier Standards or ANSI/BICSI 002 data center design guidelines.
  • Experience with BIM coordination workflows.
  • Exposure to active network equipment (switching, routing), DAS or in-building wireless systems, and/or DCIM platforms.
