Distribution Designer

Overview

Brooksource is seeking a Distribution Designer to support the design, construction, relocation, and new business work for the Distribution function of a leading electric utility company. This role leverages customer service skills, design software proficiency, and expertise in design standards and regulatory requirements, acting as a key point of contact for internal and external customers throughout the lifetime of various projects and tasks.

This is an Elevate consulting engagement with two open positions — one based in Elkins, WV and one based in Franklin, WV. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a mix of field and desk work, values a supportive, growth-focused team culture, and wants to help deliver least-cost, environmentally sound solutions for required construction work.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate and direct a strong commitment to all aspects of safety
• Utilize established construction standards and engineering practices to complete single- and 3-phase overhead and underground designs for residential, commercial, and industrial requests
• Support job progress through customer contacts, field work, job packages, and job closeout functions, including material review and paperwork verification
• Facilitate billing functions for line extension and applicable relocation work, including billing recommendations in non-routine scenarios
• Facilitate completion of outage management system (OMS) follow-up requests, inspection and maintenance repairs, streetlight installation and replacement, claims, transmission priority repairs, aerial patrol findings, and job & contracting (J&C) projects
• Acquire permits related to railroad, Department of Transportation, and municipality road right-of-way
• Collaborate with customers to secure and document easements for line extensions and highway relocation work
• Update and maintain compliant records to support technical reports, metrics, and information systems
• Travel to various off-site locations as required, including company offices, training facilities, and customer sites
• Provide ongoing assistance during emergencies and storm-related activities
• Attend all required regulatory training

Skills & Experience

• Associate degree in a technical discipline required; consideration given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years of extensive, multi-disciplined technical and operational background in lieu of a degree
• Minimum of 0-3 years of related design experience required
• Ability to pass the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH) employment test
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to guide decision-making, negotiate acceptable outcomes, and diffuse challenging situations
• Willingness to seek guidance and advice to fill gaps in understanding
• Strong self-motivation and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to manage shifting priorities
• Ability to interpret complex written and visual information such as procedures, manuals, drawings, and schematics
• Ability to gain working familiarity with standards, codes, regulations, electrical systems, construction methods, equipment, and safety requirements, including practical applications
• Ability to gain proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Office, SAP, customer request work scheduling (CREWS), outage management system (OMS), and graphic work design (DDS)
• Willingness to participate regularly in emergency and storm-related activities, including the ability to work additional hours and/or modified schedules when necessary
• Valid driver's license and personal vehicle required to commute to various facilities and locations as needed

Work Environment

• On-site position, reporting to available company facilities in Elkins, WV or Franklin, WV depending on assignment
• May require extra or irregular hours and travel throughout the service territory
• Active participation in storm and other emergency response activities required as needed

The hourly pay range for this position is determined based on a number of factors, including but not limited to the candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, and the specific requirements of the role. Final rate will be discussed during the interview process.
