What is a distributed control system operator?

A Distributed Control System (DCS) Operator is a professional responsible for monitoring, controlling, and optimizing industrial processes using a distributed control system. They ensure that manufacturing plants or industrial facilities run efficiently, safely, and within set parameters by managing process variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow. DCS Operators respond to alarms, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate with other team members to maintain smooth operations. Their role is crucial in industries like oil and gas, power generation, chemical manufacturing, and water treatment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a distributed control system operator?

To thrive as a Distributed Control System (DCS) Operator, you need a solid understanding of process control, instrumentation, and industrial automation, typically supported by a technical diploma or associate degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with DCS platforms such as Honeywell, Siemens, or Emerson, as well as relevant safety certifications and SCADA systems, is usually required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help operators manage complex systems and respond quickly to issues. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations in highly regulated industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by distributed control system operators, and how can they be managed?

Distributed Control System Operators often encounter challenges such as responding to system alarms, managing equipment malfunctions, and ensuring continuous, safe plant operations. Rapid decision-making and effective communication with maintenance and engineering teams are crucial to minimize downtime and safety risks. Staying updated with system upgrades and participating in regular training also help operators manage new technologies and evolving procedures. Collaboration and strong attention to detail are key to successfully overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Distributed Control System Operator vs Control Room Operator?

AspectDistributed Control System OperatorControl Room Operator
CredentialsTechnical certifications in control systems, process operationsBasic operational training, sometimes technical certifications
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, energy plantsControl rooms, monitoring stations across various industries
Industry UsagePower plants, oil & gas, manufacturingUtilities, transportation, manufacturing

The Distributed Control System Operator focuses on managing and monitoring complex control systems within industrial environments, often requiring technical certifications. Control Room Operators oversee plant operations from control rooms, ensuring safety and efficiency. While both roles involve monitoring equipment, the DCS Operator specializes in control system management, whereas the Control Room Operator handles overall plant operations.

Job description

About the Position

As a mid-level Electrical Engineer in the Oil & Gas group, you will support industrial, utility, and oil & gas projects throughout North America with a focus on power system studies, utility distribution engineering, substation support, and detailed electrical design. This role is intended for a strong mid-level engineer who can execute assigned engineering deliverables with limited supervision while collaborating directly with clients, utilities, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical engineering and design activities for industrial, utility, and oil & gas facilities, including medium-voltage and low-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Prepare computer-based models and perform power system studies using ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, or similar software, including short circuit, load flow, protective device coordination, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic analysis, and related studies.
  • Develop and maintain power system models, validate study results using engineering judgment, and prepare clear technical reports and recommendations for clients and project teams.
  • Support medium and high voltage T&D projects, including overhead and underground distribution systems, utility coordination, distribution upgrades, transmission studies, and construction package development.
  • Support substation, relay, and protection-related engineering activities, including relay coordination, protective relay settings, and control and relaying schematics under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Develop electrical deliverables such as one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, calculations, studies, RFIs, and construction packages.
  • Coordinate directly with clients, utilities, vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to support project execution and resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in client meetings, communicate technical findings, document action items, and support engineering decisions through clear written and verbal communication.
  • Support projects from preliminary design through detailed design, including 30%, 60%, 90%, and issued-for-construction deliverables with oversight from senior engineering staff.
  • Provide field assistance, troubleshooting, startup support, and commissioning support as required.
  • Check the work of designers, drafters, and field personnel for general quality and accuracy as required.
  • Understand and apply applicable codes, standards, and client requirements such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, and utility standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Must Have

  • Education: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited institution; electric power option preferred
  • Experience: 2 - 6 years of relevant electrical engineering, utility engineering, industrial power systems, consulting engineering, or oil & gas experience
  • Licensure: FE/EIT is preferred; progress toward PE licensure is strongly preferred
  • Experience performing power system studies using ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerFactory, Milsoft, or similar software
  • Preferred exposure to PSS/E, similar transmission planning and power system analysis tools
  • Knowledge and familiarity with medium-voltage and low-voltage power systems; experience with distribution, transmission, substation, or industrial power systems preferred
  • Utility distribution experience, including exposure to overhead and underground distribution systems, utility standards, and utility coordination
  • Exposure to protective relaying, relay coordination, SEL relays, substation systems, or utility interconnections is preferred
  • Previous interactions with clients, customers, contractors, utilities, vendors, and other project stakeholders
  • Ability to assist with client contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments, meetings, and project deliverables
  • Ability to execute assigned engineering tasks with limited supervision while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget expectations
  • Ability to travel up to 25% across states for field work, client meetings, commissioning, and project support as needed
  • Possesses effective written and oral communication skills
  • Good interpersonal and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a full-time remote work environment
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
