Job Summary

In this role the incumbent will coordinate and control the transmission and distribution of power to ensure safe and reliable service within company guidelines. The System Operator II position has the responsibilities and authority to take actions that are needed to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System and alleviate operating emergencies. Each operator shall also respond to and coordinate customer outage restoration activities. Must be able to follow a 24/7 rotating shift, schedule to include nights / weekends and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operating equipment and shedding firm load to alleviate emergencies.

  • Each System Operator shall comply with all operating instructions from the Reliability Coordinator and/or Transmission Operator (PJM).

  • Regional Transmission Operations

  • Analyze and control the Bulk Power System (facilities greater than 100kV) to ensure grid reliability in accordance with PJM reliability standards

  • Distribution Service Delivery

  • Respond to daily trouble via Outage Management (OMS), facilitate emergency storm response, dispatch resources to mitigate distribution system emergencies, manage day-to-day trouble dispatch and allocate resources appropriately across the service territory to mitigate customer outages/issues.

  • Transmission Switching

  • Operate Transmission devices on the 69kV and 230kV system to align with planned maintenance activities as well as system emergencies

  • Distribution Switching

  • Facilitate switching of distribution level devices (13kV and below) in accordance with applicable UGI guidelines. Perform planned and emergency switching on a routine basis to facilitate maintenance or mitigate emergencies

  • Individual or Team Project

  • Complete Continuing Education Hours as required to maintain NERC / PJM Certification

  • Be able to follow a 24/7 rotating shift schedule to include nights / weekends and holidays.

  • Perform overtime as required during large outage / storm restoration response.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory and economics

  • Strong Multitasking and Situational Awareness Skills

  • Make decisions quickly and accurately in critical situations; concentration; work independently

  • Basic knowledge of substation equipment and operations; relay/communications; power station operations.

  • Knowledge of NERC/FERC regulations

  • Be able to complete an 8 to 12 month on the job training program which culminates with NERC/PJM Certification

  • Must pass pre-employment testing (e.g. PSP System Operator/Dispatcher Test, Edison Electric Institute POSS/MCI test).

Education and Experience

  • Two-year degree in a Technical Field, required.
