Role Overview
The HUD Mechanical & Packaging Senior Engineer owns end-to-end build to print design of mechanical architecture and packaging execution. This role drives design, integration, and validation of robust, manufacturable hardware while enabling GM's in-house HUD strategy.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own build to print mechanical architecture and packaging across requirements, design, validation, and launch
  • Translate optical/system requirements into compact, manufacturable build to print designs
  • Lead packaging studies and trade-offs for volume, cost, and performance
  • Integrate PGU, mirrors, lenses, and electronics into build to print assemblies
  • Perform mechanical design and surrounding packaging tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure alignment
  • Design build to print Head Up Display modules ensuring strategy alignment to vibration, thermal, and environmental robustness criteria
  • Collaborate with Creative Design and Vehicle Integration teams to enable vehicle themes as well as best practices and HUD requirements
  • Align packaging with IP, HVAC, wiring, windshield, and vehicle interfaces
  • Apply GD&T and DFx for manufacturability and cost
  • Drive early packaging design feasibility and risk identification
  • Lead supplier mechanical design and integration reviews
  • Support builds, validation, and root cause analysis of mechanical build to print design
  • Provide data-driven updates to leadership

Tools & Software Requirements
  • 3D CAD (NX, Vis MockUp, CATIA, Creo)
  • GD&T, Modal, and tolerance analysis tools (Abaqus)
  • Packaging / clearance tools
  • Data analysis tools (Excel, MATLAB, Python, Ansys)
  • PLM (Teamcenter or equivalent)
  • Validation tools (Jira, PRTS)
  • Thermal / structural simulation tools

Organizational Impact
  • Establish ownership of HUD build to print packaging strategy
  • Improve opto-mechanical integration and performance
  • Reduce late-stage packaging issues

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years experience in mechanical design/packaging
