The schedule for this position is 3 or 4 days per week, 6:30am to 4:30pm, no flexibility on hours, must be in office. Starting end of April, the hours are reduced to 6:30am - 2:00pm.

Position Summary

The Mountain Dispatch Specialist is an ideal job for anyone who wants to learn about ski area operations. The successful candidate will collect and communicate Mt. Bachelor operations data to internal teams and external guests. This entails documenting and following up on matters related to weather, lift operations, grooming, and snow reporting. An ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, well-organized, and reliable. Depending on shift assignments, work may begin as early as 6:00 a.m. and conclude as late as 4:30 p.m. About 10% of the job is outdoors in any weather conditions, with the remaining 90% being indoors. This is a seasonal position that will start in mid-November and conclude in late May.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

Communication of Operational Status and Snow Conditions - 40%

  • Document the ski area's snowfall.

  • Gather information from on-mountain weather stations, online weather forecast sites, from grooming, ski patrol, lift operations and lift maintenance departments.

  • Distribute weather/snow condition and operational status updates via e-mails, websites, electronic signage boards and hard-copy prints - in a manner that is factual and honest.

  • Accurately assess weather/snow conditions.

Data Documentation - 20%

  • Maintain file of weather/snow observations, grooming reports, and terrain park logs.

  • Maintain file of lift openings, closings, and downtime.

  • Maintain file(s) of other items as requested.

Radio and Phone Dispatch - 40%

  • Act as the central communications and dispatch hub for the ski area by monitoring radio and phones, responding to requests, and executing action plans that follow established procedures.

  • Provide back-up support to Ski Patrol Dispatch during emergency situations.

Secondary Function

  • Occasionally assume Ski Patrol Dispatch duties as requested by the Communications & Community Relations Manager & Patrol Director during irregular or emergency situations when a Ski Patrol staff member is unavailable.

  • Assist the Communications & Community Relations Manager and/or Marketing department with various tasks.

Job Scope

This job operates within parameters established in the Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities description above.Position will not hold any decision-making authority beyond the daily decisions required by the position itself. Consequences for errors related to Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities will result in discipline as outlined in the company handbook.

Interpersonal Contacts

Internal interaction with office staff from multiple departments. The Communications & Community Relations Manager will be the direct report. The position will also interact with any/all staff members through radio/phone dispatch duties.

Specific Job Skills

  • License/Certifications: None

  • Technical: Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook is essential; basic knowledge of document scanning, and experience in working on website platforms for updates is preferred.

  • Physical Capabilities: Able to lift 25lbs, walk through deep snow or slippery surfaces in extreme winter weather conditions.

  • Additional: Strong verbal and written communication skills, punctuality, enthusiasm towards working very early in the morning, stamina to work long days, familiarity with the layout of Mt. Bachelor, curiosity about weather and its impact on ski area operations, and passion for winter sports.

Education/Related Experience

  • Minimum education required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum time in related position: Some experience preferred in a communications-focused position, such as a dispatcher, call center representative, or other similar position is preferred.

Current Hiring Rate: $18/hr
