Job description

Public Health Nurse Position

The ideal candidate:

  • Is a licensed public health nurse with strong clinical assessment and health education skills.
  • Has experience in providing preventive and community-based nursing services across diverse settings.
  • Is skilled in health assessment, care coordination, health education, and disease prevention across the lifespan.
  • Is an effective communicator with the ability to educate individuals, families, and community groups.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and builds trusting relationships with diverse populations.
  • Works independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and community partners.
  • Is organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in home, clinic, school, and community environments.
  • Is committed to promoting public health, improving health outcomes, and supporting vulnerable populations.
  • Is knowledgeable in public health best practices, health promotion, and prevention strategies that support health pregnancies, infants, children, and families.
  • Maintains professionalism, sound judgment, and compassion in delivering client-centered care.

Qualifications

The minimum and preferred requirements are listed below. While the following requirements outline the minimum qualifications, the County reserves the right to select applicants for further consideration who demonstrate the best qualifications match for the job. Education and Experience:

Public Health Nurse Intern Minimum: Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing and possession of a license as a Registered Nurse.

Public Health Nurse Minimum: Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing and possession of a license as a Registered Nurse and a Public Health Nurse certificate.

Preferred: In addition to the minimum, some experience in nursing.

Licenses and Certification:
  • The ability to obtain a valid California Class C driver's license within ten (10) days of employment.
  • Possess a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California; must provide proof of re-certification within 10 calendar days prior to expiration.
  • Possess a current valid CPR Certification or obtain with the first six months of employment; maintain valid certification.
  • Must complete periodic continuing education coursework as required to maintain active licensure.
  • Public Health Nurse Intern – The ability to obtain a valid certification as a Public Health Nurse in the State of California within 12 months of employment with proof of application within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Public Health Nurse – Possess of valid certification as a Public Health Nurse in the State of California.
Special Requirements:
  • Successfully complete an extensive and thorough background investigation which includes Live Scan fingerprinting prior to hire.
  • DMV printout prior to hire.
  • Will be required to perform disaster service activities pursuant to Government Code 3100-3109.
