Disaster Adjuster information

What is a disaster adjuster?

A Disaster Adjuster is a professional who assesses damage and determines insurance payouts after natural disasters or large-scale emergencies, such as hurricanes, floods, or wildfires. They inspect affected properties, evaluate losses, and work closely with policyholders to process claims quickly and fairly. Disaster Adjusters often travel to disaster sites, work in challenging conditions, and play a key role in helping individuals and businesses recover after catastrophic events.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disaster adjuster, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disaster Adjuster, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of insurance policies, and experience in property assessment, often supported by relevant licenses or certifications. Familiarity with claims management software, digital imaging tools, and remote inspection technologies is typically required. Excellent communication, empathy, and organizational skills help build trust with clients and efficiently manage high-stress situations. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate, timely claims resolutions and supporting affected individuals during challenging times.

What are some typical challenges disaster adjusters face when handling large-scale catastrophe claims?

Disaster Adjusters often encounter the challenge of managing a high volume of claims in a short period, especially after major natural disasters. They must quickly assess damage, coordinate with policyholders, and collaborate with other adjusters and contractors while maintaining accuracy and empathy under pressure. Additionally, working in disaster zones may involve unpredictable travel, long hours, and adapting to rapidly changing conditions, all of which require strong organizational and communication skills.

What is the difference between Disaster Adjuster vs Property Claims Adjuster?

Disaster AdjusterProperty Claims Adjuster
Handles claims related to natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, and wildfiresHandles claims for property damage caused by various incidents, including fire, theft, or vandalism
Requires knowledge of disaster-specific policies and extensive fieldwork in affected areasRequires general property insurance knowledge and often works in office or on-site at claim locations
Often employed by insurance companies or public adjusting firms during large-scale disaster eventsEmployed by insurance companies to assess and settle property damage claims

Disaster Adjusters specialize in managing claims related to natural disasters, often working in affected areas, while Property Claims Adjusters handle a broader range of property damage claims. Both roles require similar certifications and insurance knowledge, but Disaster Adjusters focus on large-scale disaster scenarios.

How do you become a disaster adjuster?

To become a disaster adjuster, typically you need a high school diploma or equivalent, relevant insurance licensing, and training in claims adjusting. Gaining experience in insurance or claims handling and obtaining certifications such as the Certified Claims Adjuster (CCA) can improve job prospects; the role often involves working in the field during disaster response efforts.

Is a disaster adjuster a good job?

Disaster adjusters evaluate insurance claims related to natural and man-made disasters, often working in challenging environments and requiring strong communication and analytical skills. The job can offer competitive pay, opportunities for overtime, and seasonal work, but it may involve irregular hours and exposure to stressful situations. Certification and experience in insurance or claims adjusting are typically required.

Job description

Reconstruction Claims Adjuster

(Internal Restoration Claims & Approval Role – No Adjuster License Required)

Own the Claim. Drive the Approval. Move Reconstruction Forward.

At Alert Disaster Restoration, reconstruction doesn’t start until claims move—and claims don’t move without strong adjusters driving them forward.

We’re hiring an experienced Reconstruction Claims Adjuster to manage insurance claims from start to finish, coordinate accurate scopes of work, negotiate approvals, and support our Project Supervisors in delivering exceptional client outcomes while protecting company gross profit.

This is a hands-on, in person role for someone who knows property claims, understands construction, and thrives on accountability, negotiation, and results.

Why This Role Is Critical

This position sits at the center of our reconstruction operation. You’ll work directly with:

  • Project Supervisors
  • Estimators
  • Insurance Carriers & Independent Adjusters
  • Internal Operations & Leadership

When you do your job well:

  • Claims are approved faster
  • Scopes are written correctly the first time
  • Negotiations protect margin
  • Projects move without delay
  • Clients stay confident and informed

This role directly impacts cash flow, cycle time, gross profit, and customer satisfaction.

Job Summary

As a Reconstruction Claims Adjuster (in-person position) at Alert Disaster Restoration, you will manage and drive the reconstruction insurance claim process from start to finish. You will coordinate accurate scopes of work, prepare and review estimates, negotiate with carrier and independent adjusters, and support Project Supervisors in delivering successful reconstruction projects that meet company standards.

Your primary focus is on achieving approvals, maintaining estimate accuracy, protecting margins, and keeping projects moving.

Role Clarification (Important)

This position is an internal, in office reconstruction claims role within a restoration company. While the title includes “Claims Adjuster,” this role does not require or function as a licensed insurance adjuster and does not adjust claims on behalf of an insurance carrier.

Instead, this role focuses on:

  • Coordinating scopes of work
  • Preparing and reviewing estimates
  • Negotiating with carrier and independent adjusters
  • Driving claim approvals to support reconstruction projects

No insurance adjuster license is required for this position.

Key Responsibilities

Claim Processing & Documentation

  • Receive and review documentation from internal departments for completed or required work
  • Ensure claim files are complete, accurate, and submission ready
  • Maintain detailed claim records in the claims management system

Damage Evaluation & Scope Coordination

  • Assess property damages using industry standards and company guidelines
  • Write and/or coordinate accurate scopes of work aligned with field conditions
  • Ensure estimates support both carrier requirements and company gross profit standards

Negotiation & Approval

  • Negotiate claim approvals, supplements, and settlements with carrier and independent adjusters
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and persistently to resolve claims efficiently
  • Drive timely decisions and approvals within established authority

Project & Team Support

  • Collaborate with Project Supervisors to keep reconstruction projects on schedule
  • Support reconstruction sales and execution through strong claim positioning
  • Escalate complex or high value claims when appropriate

Customer & Stakeholder Communication

  • Provide responsive, professional, and empathetic service to:
    • Policyholders
    • Adjusters
    • Internal stakeholders
  • Provide updates, guidance, and clarity throughout the claims process

Compensation & Bonus Structure

  • Base Salary: $70,000–$105,000 (based on experience)
  • Bonus: Performance based, tied to:
    • Approval cycle time
    • Accuracy of scopes and estimates
    • Reduction of stalled or disputed claims
    • Overall reconstruction claim throughput

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of property insurance claims adjusting experience, including large loss claims
  • Strong construction knowledge (required)
  • Highly skilled in Xactimate
  • Proven experience negotiating with carrier and independent adjusters
  • Proficiency with claims management systems and multitasking across platforms
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  • Customer focused mindset with strong attention to detail
  • Relevant certifications a plus:
    • Xactimate Certified
    • AIC, CPCU
    • IICRC or related industry credentials

No insurance adjuster license required; this role does not act on behalf of an insurance carrier

Working Conditions

  • In person office position
  • Standard business hours
  • Collaborative, fast paced team environment
  • Opportunities for professional growth as the company scales
