Overview

Supervises the day-to-day operations and productivity of the Vancouver structural practice area. Oversees all Vancouver structural practice area services, operations, and personnel. Develops short- and long-term strategies for hiring, developing, training, and retaining employees. Complies with all company operating procedures and policies. Maintains a high level of customer/client satisfaction and works to develop new and repeat business. Acknowledges client concerns and responds quickly to resolve problems. Develops departmental budgets, business plans, and reports. Works under minimal supervision, exercising initiative and independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks.

The Salary Range for this position is $99,900 - $149,900 and is dependent on education, experience, location and certifications/licensure.

Essential Job Functions

  • Responsible for the financial performance and success of the Structural Engineering practice area for the Vancouver office.
  • Oversees daily operations of the Structural Engineering practice area for the Vancouver district and manages employees/contractors within that department.
  • Assists in the hiring of new staff. Train inexperienced staff on how the company operates.
  • Leads by example and establishes a positive, professional work environment.
  • Conducts annual written performance reviews on all subordinates.
  • Coaches, disciplines, and terminates employees as needed.
  • Interacts with Technical Director and VP, Technical Services to support staff development and provide feedback on employee performance.
  • Completes assignments in Practice Leader’s own field of professional expertise.
  • Reviews and ensures that deliverables, including reports and proposals, prepared by staff members meet Rimkus standards of accuracy/professionalism and are properly signed and sealed.
  • Assists in marketing activities to promote the Structural Engineering practice area in the Vancouver district and build relationships with current and future clients.
  • Develops an annual business plan for the continued growth and profitability of the office.
  • Works with VP, Technical Services to prepare budgets and review and financial statements. Adjusts staff size and other operating expenses as necessary to ensure profitability.
  • Reviews all draft invoices before submission as final invoices.
  • Resolves issues that are presented by our clients in a quick and satisfactory manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience, Education and Certifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in the province as a minimum
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience in a consulting engineering design role, construction engineering environment, managing structural investigation, new builds, and restoration projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of National Building Code of Canada
  • Experience with client relations.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Past supervisory / management experience is required.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, specifically in accuracy of calculations and completeness of data collection and notation.
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Self-motivating and able to multi-task.
  • Ability to act with business integrity and professionalism.

Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel Requirements

Physical Demands – Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. industrial, construction and/or residential sites). The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on sloped and flat roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, climb inside attics, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to client sites or job sites. Working at heights, including accessing buildings by ladders, swing stages, and mechanical lifts may be necessary depending on assigned discipline. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary. The employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting inspections, speaking, and interacting with clients, preparing drawings and written reports.

Overtime – There will be some occasions where overtime (or working after normal business hours) will be required to meet the demands of the position.

Travel – This position requires up to 25% local area travel. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
