Job Description Summary:

The Data Scientist will perform basic to intermediate-level data management including data cleaning, data entry, and report generation; participate in project meetings with collaborators; meet with end users for an in-depth understanding of informatics needs and requirements for a broad range of projects; train employees on the use of business intelligence (BI) applications; and assist with the preparation of written reports, manuscripts, and grant applications with investigators under the supervision of a Biostatistics & Data Science member. This individual will play a key role with Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO), IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network (ISPCTN), and Data Coordinating and Operations Center (DCOC) housed within the Department of Biostatistics & Data Science in ensuring high-quality data management across multi-site clinical trials. This position will serve as the primary point of contact between the DCOC and the participating ISPCTN sites for all data-related activities.

Job Description Job Duties
  • Serve as the primary data management liaison with ISPCTN clinical sites.
  • Respond to site inquiries and provide timely resolution for data-related issues, including electronic data capture (EDC) access, data entry, and query management.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of study-specific data dictionaries and case report forms (CRFs), ensuring alignment with protocol requirements and standardized data elements.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to incorporate feedback and maintain consistency across studies.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and workflows related to data management, EDC use, and site communication.
  • Ensure SOPs are current, aligned with best practices, and implemented across the consortium.
  • Create reports in CRIS Velos and/or Redcap under the supervisor of the Assistant Director of Data Science.
  • Create electronic case report forms (eCRFs).
  • Develop applications to enhance business decision-making capabilities.
  • Analyze existing databases, reports, and processes for opportunities to automate further or simplify utilizing BI tools.
  • Analyze data within various databases utilizing various BI tools and reporting tools to inform business decisions and actions.
  • Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions for the data dictionary.
  • Train pertinent staff and other end-users as needed on BI applications, and train other BI specialists on various BI tools.
  • Troubleshoot user issues with BI applications.
  • Ensure research data systems and data management activities comply with applicable federal regulations, Good Clinical Practice guidelines, institutional policies, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assist the Director of Research IT with system administration, security, maintenance, and operational oversight of research data systems.
  • Support the preparation of reports, manuscripts, and grant applications for investigators under the supervision of Assistant Director of Data Science.
  • Develop and maintain Python and R pipelines for data cleaning, preprocessing, and structuring.
  • Build and update Shiny applications to facilitate interactive data visualization and reporting.
  • Develop pipelines for imaging data harmonization, feature extraction, and quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with neuroimaging investigators to integrate imaging-derived biomarkers with clinical and behavioral datasets.
  • Support reproducible research by maintaining version-controlled analytic workflows and adhering to FAIR data principles.

Required Qualifications Work Experience:
  • Four (4) years of experience in Computer Science , Information Technology, Statistics, Mathematics or related field. Relevant education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience with troubleshooting data-related issues.
  • Experience working in a Windows environment.
  • Experience in Relational databases.
  • Experience in creating, conducting training, or documenting Metadata, such as data dictionaries that are utilized for research.
Preferred Qualifications Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, or Mathematics.

Work Experience:
  • Two (2) years of experience in academic or private health-related research environments.
  • Experience programming in at least one higher-level language (C, C++, Java).
  • Experience with software integration, such as LDAP and Active Directory. PL/SQL, SQL functions, triggers, complex queries, SQL reports.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, and Business Intelligence tools.
  • Experience with database migration, database development, database maintenance, performance tuning, optimization, or setting up and managing database connections.
  • Experience with the automation of the ETL process between databases.
  • Experience working in a LINUX/UNIX environment.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
