What does a director SolidWorks do?

A Director SolidWorks is a senior leader responsible for overseeing teams that use SolidWorks, a popular computer-aided design (CAD) software, to develop and manage product designs. They set strategic direction for design projects, ensure efficient use of SolidWorks tools, and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to bring concepts to reality. This role often involves managing budgets, developing team skills, and ensuring that design standards and timelines are met. Directors also stay updated on new SolidWorks features and best practices to keep their teams competitive and innovative.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director SolidWorks?

To thrive as a Director of SolidWorks, you need advanced expertise in mechanical engineering, extensive experience with CAD design, and a strong background in team leadership—often backed by a relevant engineering degree and industry certifications. Mastery of SolidWorks software, PDM systems, and knowledge of related PLM tools are essential for overseeing complex design projects. Exceptional communication, project management, and strategic decision-making skills help drive team performance and innovation. These abilities ensure the efficient delivery of high-quality engineering solutions and the successful coordination of multidisciplinary teams.

How does a director SolidWorks typically collaborate with engineering and design teams to drive project success?

A Director of SolidWorks works closely with engineering and design teams by establishing best practices for 3D modeling, ensuring adherence to project timelines, and providing technical guidance on complex design challenges. They often coordinate cross-functional meetings to align project objectives and resolve workflow bottlenecks. Additionally, they mentor team members on advanced SolidWorks techniques, facilitate training sessions, and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the department.

What is the difference between Director Solidworks vs Mechanical Engineer?

Director of Applications Engineering & Field Support

Job description

Description:

Lead the team that specifies our systems — and the team that answers when one doesn't work.

ENERVEX designs and manufactures mechanical exhaust, chimney, and heat-recovery systems for commercial and industrial buildings. We are combining Applications Engineering and Technical Support into a single function, Technical Services, and hiring a Director to lead it.

The reason is specific. When a system underperforms in the field, the cause may be sizing, product performance, unclear documentation, or an installation that departed from the submittal — and until now that determination was made across an organizational boundary. This role owns both sides. For the first time, one person can run a field problem to its actual root cause and fix that, rather than negotiate about whose fault it was.

What you will own

  • A team of 8–12 across applications engineering and technical support, working through two discipline leads.
  • System design and sizing for commercial and industrial projects — draft and static pressure calculations, equipment selection, ASHRAE chimney design equations, NFPA 211 and NFPA 54.
  • SolidWorks modeling, submittal drawings, and BIM and clash detection coordination with contractors, specifying engineers, and owners.
  • Technical support performance — response times, commissioning and startup support, field troubleshooting, and warranty diagnosis.
  • Our technical training program and Absorb LMS for internal staff, independent representatives, and channel partners.
  • A seat on the leadership team, the function's budget, and its annual plan.

Requirements:

What we are looking for

  • BSME or equivalent experience, with eight or more years in exhaust, venting, HVAC, or combustion system design.
  • Hands-on SolidWorks proficiency — enough to build the model yourself and to critique your team's work credibly.
  • Demonstrated experience applying ASHRAE chimney design equations.
  • LMS administration experience — building courses, curricula, and certification tracks. Absorb specifically is a strong plus.
  • Three or more years leading a technical team.
  • Someone who can run a support queue to a service level in the same week they are reviewing a complex submittal. Both matter here, and most candidates are strong at only one.

The honest version

This is not a role where you delegate the technical work. You will review models, arbitrate calculations, and occasionally get on a roof. The support phone is real and it does not respect your calendar — part of the job is building the discipline that protects engineering time from it. In exchange, you get a function you can actually design, a direct line to the President & COO, and the authority to fix the root cause instead of documenting it.

Practical details

  • Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Relocation assistance is available for the right candidate — if you are the right person for this role, we will help you get here.
  • Travel 15–20 days per year, primarily in the US and Canada.
  • On-site at our Alpharetta, Georgia facility, in the north Atlanta metro.
