Your opportunity:

As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), you will be responsible for providing comprehensive patient care in this specialized area. The PACU RN will demonstrate a professional and caring approach to patients and families using the primary/team nursing model. The PACU RN must come with a minimum of 5 years of Acute Surgical Nursing experience, including Critical Care, Emergency Department and/or the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The PACU RN also must have strong organizational and prioritization skills, and functions autonomously in the PACU setting. The PACU RN participates in collaborative practice with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making for the best course of action in providing patient care.
  • Leadership, teamwork, educate and orientate nursing staff members.
  • Provide post-operative patient care including patient assessment, vitals, & medication administration in the PACU setting.
  • Complete timely and accurate records on an electronic medical charting system.
  • Responded to emergent events in any department including codes situation.
  • Maintain crash cart, lifepack checks, MH cart, HemoCue, Glucose meter.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program
  • Active practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS-HCP)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • 5 years of Acute Surgical Nursing Experience, including Critical Care, Emergency Department and/or PACU
  • Physical ability to provide patient care to unresponsive patients (including lifting, transfers, airway management)
  • Computer literacy and experience in electronic medical records
  • Ability to work assigned rotation, staggered shift times, and extended shifts
