The Opportunity

The Director of Electrical Engineering is responsible for leading the design, development, implementation, operation, and optimization of electrical infrastructure supporting hyperscale, colocation, and AI-focused data center projects. This position provides strategic and technical leadership for mission-critical electrical systems that support high-density computing environments, GPU clusters, artificial intelligence workloads, machine learning platforms, cloud infrastructure, and next-generation digital technologies.

This role oversees engineering teams responsible for medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, power generation, substations, switchgear, UPS systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable energy integration, power distribution architecture, energy efficiency programs, and electrical reliability initiatives. The Director ensures all designs meet the highest standards for resiliency, scalability, sustainability, safety, and operational excellence while delivering uptime requirements of Tier III and Tier IV data center environments.

The Director serves as the organization's subject matter expert for mission-critical electrical infrastructure and partners with operations, construction, commissioning, development, sustainability, and executive leadership teams to support strategic growth initiatives.

What you will do?

Develop and execute electrical engineering strategies that support AI, hyperscale, cloud, and mission-critical data center operations while establishing long-term infrastructure roadmaps to meet future AI computing demands and increased rack power densities. This role leads the evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies related to AI infrastructure, electrical resiliency, and energy optimization, and advises executive leadership on infrastructure investments, capacity planning, scalability strategies, and risk mitigation. The Director is also responsible for developing engineering standards, policies, procedures, and design guidelines to ensure consistency, reliability, and operational excellence across the organization. The Director will lead the electrical team and mentor subject matter experts, electrical engineers and designers that support the overall organizational needs.

Electrical Infrastructure Design and Operations Oversight

  • Oversee the design, operation, and reliability of utility service entrance systems, high-voltage transmission connections, substations, transformer yards, medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, generator plants, UPS systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), static transfer switches, automatic transfer switches, switchgear, switchboards, Power Distribution Units (PDUs), Remote Power Panels (RPPs), busway systems, rack-level electrical distribution, grounding and bonding systems, arc flash mitigation programs, and power monitoring and energy management systems.

AI and High-Density Computing Infrastructure Support

  • Lead engineering efforts supporting NVIDIA GPU clusters, AI training environments, machine learning infrastructure, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, large-scale cloud operations, high-density server deployments, liquid-cooled computing environments, direct-to-chip cooling applications, , high-density racks exceeding 50 kW, 80 kW, and 120+ kW capacities, and next-generation power architectures for AI data centers.

Engineering Design and Technical Oversight

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams in the development of conceptual, preliminary, and detailed electrical designs.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with operational resiliency and redundancy standards.
  • Establish electrical design standards for new construction and retrofit projects.
  • Manage engineering support during commissioning and startup activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all client and regulatory requirements.

Reliability and Uptime Management

  • Ensure infrastructure designs meet Tier III and Tier IV reliability objectives.
  • Drive initiatives achieving 99.999% uptime objectives.
  • Manage electrical risk assessments and infrastructure resiliency studies.

Energy and Sustainability Leadership

  • Lead implementation of sustainability initiatives.
  • Evaluate solar, wind, battery, and microgrid technologies.
  • Improve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

Utility and Grid Integration

  • Utilize internal Substation team to manage utility interconnection projects.
  • Support transmission and distribution planning activities.
  • Coordinate electrical capacity expansion efforts.
  • Utilize internal Substation team to lead utility negotiations and infrastructure planning efforts.
  • Review load forecasting and energy demand projections generated by internal team.

Commissioning and Construction Support

  • Support integrated systems testing (IST).
  • Support construction teams during project execution.
  • Verify electrical systems perform as designed before operational turnover.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Lead Electrical Engineering Managers.
  • Supervise Senior Electrical Engineers.
  • Oversee Design Engineers and Engineering Specialists.
  • Manage Commissioning Engineers.
  • Develop departmental staffing plans.
  • Conduct performance management and succession planning.
  • Build and mentor high-performing engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Masters degree in electrical engineering, MBA, or Master's Degree in Power Systems Engineering.
  • 15+ years of electrical engineering experience,10+ years leading engineering teams within mission-critical environments,
  • Experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data centers.
  • Experience with AI data center infrastructure development.
  • Experience supporting facilities exceeding 50 MW of critical load.
  • Experience with medium-voltage and high-voltage infrastructure design.
  • Experience leading large-scale capital projects exceeding $100M.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.
