The Position

Liberty Mutual Investments Technology (LMI Technology) is seeking a Senior Director, Head of Investment Engineering, reporting to the Chief Technology Officer. This senior leader will be responsible for engineering strategy, software delivery, data and AI enablement, and talent development across the Investments Technology organization.

Working closely with investment professionals, technology leaders, and strategic partners, this executive will shape the future of engineering within Liberty Mutual Investments, ensuring technology capabilities support a complex global investment portfolio spanning public and private markets.

The ideal candidate combines deep engineering leadership experience with strong investment management domain knowledge and a demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams, drive modernization, and operate effectively within a highly regulated environment.

Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Delivery

  • Define and execute engineering strategy aligned Liberty Mutual's strategic technology priorities and ins service of LMI's objectives.
  • Lead delivery of technology solutions supporting investment management, trading, operations, risk management, and data capabilities.
  • Establish engineering standards and practices that promote quality, scalability, resiliency, and operational excellence.
  • Advance technology efforts through cloud technologies, platform engineering, automation, and AI-enabled software development.

Engineering Leadership

  • Build, lead, and develop an engineering organization through a team of senior leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Lead organizational strategy, talent development, succession planning, delivery excellence, and high-performance engineering culture.
  • Partner with business and technology leaders to identify opportunities where technology can drive business value and competitive advantage.
  • Guide strategic technology decisions, including build-versus-buy evaluations and key vendor partnerships.
  • Monitor industry and technology trends to inform future investment and engineering priorities.

Governance & Operational Excellence

  • Ensure engineering practices align with regulatory, cybersecurity, operational risk, and audit requirements
  • Promote disciplined execution while balancing innovation, speed, and risk management.
  • Drive reliability, resiliency, and operational excellence across critical investment platforms.

  

Qualifications
  • Significant experience leading software and data engineering organizations within enterprise environments, experience with AWS and Snowflake preferred.
  • Proven track record building and developing high-performing engineering teams and leadership organizations.
  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices, cloud technologies (AWS), platform architecture, and AI-enabled development.
  • Experience working with a mix of vendor applications and custom builds and experience with Blackrock Aladdin, E-Front, and/or Simcorp Dimension.
  • Deep knowledge of investment workflows, asset classes, portfolio management, trading, research, and investment operations.
  • Experience supporting multiple asset classes, with strong preference for candidates who bring expertise in fixed income, private markets, alternatives, private credit, or private equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and implement enterprise technology platforms and strategic vendor solutions.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence senior business and technology leaders.
  • Experience operating within highly regulated environments that require strong governance and controls.
  • Demonstrated success managing multi-million dollar technology budgets and delivering ROI.
  • Experience building and leading high-performing, geographically distributed, and diverse teams.
  • Demonstrates strong AI literacy and uses AI-enabled tools to enhance speed, accuracy, and insight generation while maintaining sound judgment and compliance with governance standards.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
