Position function:


Reporting to the Senior R&D Scientist - DAMINAIDE for Caldic Canada, Inc. the individual will be responsible for supporting the Companion Animal Team in building and growing Animal Premix & Damin-Aide Solutions through formulation and development of products and customer projects.


Scope:


The position will be responsible for leading and completing the R&D process of formulation and development of new products from the concept stage to prototype and full-scale production as well as ingredient matches and modifications for existing products for Companion Animal customers within the specific sector. This role will be an Integral R&D Scientist in the Companion Animal -Daminaide Team and will provide support both internal and customer facing relationships, and lending mentor support to RD Specialist, R&D Techs and Lab Students.


Major tasks and duties:


  • Leading, developing and completing R&D projects with a focus on All companion animal projects as defined by the Senior R&D Scientist Damin-Aide or outlined thru the NPD process.
  • Develop and Formulate R&D capabilities for Companion Animal solutions to support the growth of the brand.
  • Drives animal-centric R&D innovation (premix, supplement, and functional nutrition systems for pet palatability, digestibility, functional health for animals)
  • Leads companion animal formulation, pipeline
  • Responsible for supporting the successful commercialization of new products.
  • Companion Animal Trials, Samples and HPLC testing
  • Regulatory /QA/QC feed and pet compliance. (should have pet/FDA/AAFCO alignment Knowledge)
  • Strategic Collaboration with Sourcing for Animal Project ingredients (natural, feed and botanical)
  • Collaborate with the appropriate business team to outline new product development and improvement projects.
  • Provide support with CDM’s and collaboratively works with and develops customer facing relationships and presentation skills.
  • Collaborates with the pricing team to understand cost and develop competitor R&D initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Technical and Applications Team to develop, coordinate, prepare and present relevant concepts to customers featuring Caldic manufactured or distributed products for companion animal
  • Participate in and/or lead product improvement initiatives to improve the quality of existing products in response to customer feedback, to improve nutritional value, colour, flavour, texture and convenience, or to improve cost efficiencies in the plant.
  • Participate in marketing activities such as trade shows (customer engagement presentations), focus groups, new idea generation, researching market trends as they pertain to strategic business plan and new products
  • Provide technical support and expertise in problem solving for issues relating to product quality.
  • Work closely with production, marketing, QA/QC in monitoring the performance of new products during post-launch activities in the New Product Process; may include troubleshooting, ingredient recommendations and customer site visits
  • Provide preliminary product documentation including Specifications.
  • Participate in joint calls and customer on-site trials as required.
  • Participate in development and brand marketing initiatives.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned by Senior R&D Scientist related to companion animal
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, GMP’s and HACCP requirements. Regulatory /QA/QC feed and pet compliance. (should have pet/FDA/AAFCO alignment Knowledge)


Knowledge/Skills and Experience:


  • University. M.Sc. – Food Science or equivalent is a strong asset
  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of product development experience in the Petfood industry preferably in Vitamins and Minerals, Fortification
  • Experience in pet manufacturing, pet food formulation
  • External Partnerships an asset (i.e. with Veterinary advisors etc.)
  • Commercial Sales experience is an asset
  • Must have strong oral/written communication and good interpersonal skills
  • Must have strong presentation skills
  • Must have strong computer knowledge and skills (MS Office)
