Job description

Director of Engineering

Location: Greenville, SC (Relocation Assistance Available)

Company: Bridge Brothers

About Bridge Brothers

Bridge Brothers designs, engineers, fabricates, and constructs highly customized steel bridge systems for municipalities, national parks, contractors, energy companies, private developers, and industrial clients across North America.

Unlike firms focused on repetitive design work, every project presents a new engineering challenge. Our team partners across engineering, detailing, fabrication, construction, and project management to deliver one-of-a-kind structures that are built—not just designed.

As one of the fastest-growing bridge companies in the industry, we're investing heavily in our engineering organization and are looking for a leader to help build what comes next.

The Opportunity

Bridge Brothers is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead and continue building our engineering organization.

This is not simply a technical leadership role.

The Director of Engineering will be responsible for the overall performance of the engineering department—including people, processes, quality, execution, technology, and continuous improvement.

You'll work directly with executive leadership to build a scalable engineering organization capable of supporting the company's continued growth while remaining closely connected to the technical side of the business.

The ideal candidate enjoys building teams, improving operations, developing people, and creating systems just as much as solving engineering problems.

This is an opportunity to make a lasting impact on a growing company where your decisions will shape the future of the engineering department.

What You'll OwnEngineering Organization
  • Lead, develop, and grow the engineering department.
  • Recruit, hire, mentor, and retain high-performing engineers and designers.
  • Build a culture centered around accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
  • Develop career paths, succession planning, and professional development programs.
  • Establish performance expectations and coach team members toward continued growth.
Engineering Operations
  • Own engineering department performance, capacity planning, workload balancing, and resource allocation.
  • Develop scalable engineering processes, workflows, standards, and documentation.
  • Implement and improve QA/QC procedures, design review processes, and engineering best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that improve quality, efficiency, and project execution.
  • Evaluate and implement new engineering tools, software, automation, and technology.
Technical Leadership
  • Provide executive oversight of structural engineering activities across custom steel bridge projects.
  • Guide engineers through complex technical challenges and major design decisions.
  • Review critical engineering calculations, designs, and technical deliverables.
  • Ensure engineering solutions are practical, constructable, and aligned with fabrication and field operations.
  • Maintain technical involvement by providing guidance, reviewing critical engineering decisions, and supporting the team on complex challenges while empowering engineers to own day-to-day project execution.
Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Partner closely with detailing, fabrication, construction, project management, procurement, and executive leadership.
  • Improve communication and collaboration across departments.
  • Support estimating and business development with technical guidance during project pursuits.
  • Remove operational bottlenecks that impact engineering performance or project delivery.
Strategic Leadership
  • Establish the long-term vision for the engineering organization.
  • Develop KPIs and performance metrics that drive accountability and operational excellence.
  • Identify opportunities to improve profitability through engineering innovation, standardization, and process improvements.
  • Help position the engineering department for future growth as the company continues to scale.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience within bridges, structural steel, heavy civil, industrial, manufacturing, transportation, energy, marine, or other engineered steel environments.
  • Previous experience leading engineering teams, departments, or engineering operations.
  • Demonstrated success developing engineers, improving processes, and building high-performing teams.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering, steel design, fabrication, and construction practices.
  • Experience managing engineering resources across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.

Bridge experience is beneficial but not required. We welcome leaders from structural steel, industrial manufacturing, heavy civil, commercial structures, transportation, energy, or other complex structural engineering environments.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a leader who wants to build something—not simply maintain it.

Someone who:

  • Enjoys developing people and building high-performing teams.
  • Creates systems that improve quality, accountability, and execution.
  • Understands the realities of fabrication, construction, and practical engineering.
  • Thrives in an entrepreneurial environment where decisions move quickly.
  • Leads with humility, ownership, and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Is excited about helping shape the future of a rapidly growing engineering organization.
Why Bridge Brothers?
  • Lead engineering at one of the fastest-growing bridge companies in America.
  • Build and shape an engineering organization with executive support.
  • High level of autonomy and influence.
  • Work on highly customized projects rather than repetitive production design.
  • Collaborative environment with direct access to company leadership.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits.
  • Significant opportunity for long-term growth and organizational impact.
Benefits
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid Time Off
  • Paid company holidays
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Relocation assistance available for qualified candidates
