What does a director of creative development do?

A Director of Creative Development leads the creative vision and strategy for projects within an organization, such as film, television, advertising, or digital media. They oversee the development of new ideas, manage creative teams, and collaborate with writers, designers, producers, and clients to bring concepts to life. Their responsibilities often include evaluating and selecting projects, guiding the creative process, ensuring alignment with brand goals, and nurturing talent within their team. This role requires both strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of industry trends and audience preferences.

Outstanding leadership, communication, and vision-setting skills help inspire teams and foster innovation. These abilities are vital for delivering compelling creative output, meeting client objectives, and ensuring successful project execution in a competitive market.

  • Proven success leading and inspiring creative teams across multiple disciplines (design, copy, content).
  • Expertise in working with licensed brands and navigating partner approval processes (experience in sports or entertainment licensing is a plus).
  • Strong visual sensibility and storytelling skills, with experience across digital, print, packaging, and social.
  • Comfortable leading strategic presentations and creative reviews with senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Experience managing external creative partners, agencies, and freelancers.
  • Passion for culture, fandom, and collectibles-a deep appreciation of what makes brands meaningful to consumers.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that values innovation and experimentation.
