Who We Are

Founded in 2021, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four-year MD program that will enhance traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The school's culture embraces self-care to empower students to care for their own well-being as well as their patients'. The school's state-of-the-art medical education facility is located in Bentonville, Arkansas on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute. The school has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

About The Position

The Extended Reality Simulation Specialist (XR Sim Specialist) is responsible for the daily implementation and support of simulation, innovation, and modeling technology for the School of Medicine. The XR Sim Specialist aids in development and is technical lead for experiential learning activities that incorporate a wide variety of simulation systems and rapid prototyping medical equipment. The XR Sim Specialist serves as technical support to learners, faculty, and staff prior to, during, and after learning activities. The XR Sim Specialist reports to the Director of Simulation and has specific responsibilities for logistical planning, program testing, session set-up and take-down, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all simulation and rapid prototyping software, hardware, peripherals, and related equipment. The XR Sim Specialist designs and delivers training information to faculty and staff for respective modalities and supports faculty, staff, and learners during learning activities, including asynchronous activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the technical implementation of simulation and modeling systems through supporting the content, scenario, activity, within the learning activity.
  • Serves as technical expert for simulation modeling and management system(s) and the corresponding peripheral equipment.
  • Ensures simulation and modeling systems functionality and appropriateness with stated scenario objectives and anticipated outcomes.
  • Authors simulation programs and respective instructional guides for internal publication.
  • Provides technical assistance to users in accessing, operating, and troubleshooting simulation and modeling technologies and respective assets.
  • Investigates, recommends, and drives innovation in immersive technology, extended reality, data visualization, modeling, etc., that aligns with curriculum objectives.
  • Provides excellent customer service with faculty, instructors, staff, students, and guests through verbal, non-verbal, and written communication.
  • Collaborates with internal and external individuals to best support and achieve curricula and non-curricula events, scenarios, and activities.
  • Evaluates learning activities and facilitates the implementation of program and service improvement plans.
  • Serves to instruct faculty, staff, and students at approved events and activities.
  • Provides tours and demonstrates functionalities and capabilities of simulation systems.
  • Coordinates with Clinical Skills Operations Manager to ensure resources and back-ups are readily available to support scheduled learning activities and faculty requests.
  • Routinely maintains, both scheduled and unscheduled, simulation software, corresponding peripheral components, and equipment, and coordinates and implements scheduled updates and documents activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, other technical disciplines, adult-education, or another related field.
  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, adult education, or healthcare area, preferred.
  • 2 years or more of technical support experience in healthcare, graduate level education, instructional technology, computer-based learning, or simulation environment.
  • 4 years or more technical support experience in a healthcare or health professions program simulation center, preferred.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and/or medical-related basic science, preferred.
  • Experience with multimedia, audiovisual, and/or 3-D printing technology, preferred.
  • Experience with moulage and stage make-up applications, preferred.
  • Multi-lingual skill preferred.
  • JavaScript, SQL, HTML, Unity, or Unreal programming certificates, preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS), preferred.

Physical Demands: In the work environment described, position requires working at a desk and utilizing a computer and a telephone for prolonged periods of time and good eye/hand coordination, bending and stretching, and physical stamina to lift and transport a minimum of 30 pounds. Work Environment: Work is performed on-site (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) in a professional, climate-controlled office environment with standard office equipment, including computers, printers, and telephones. This role requires working in an open setting near colleagues. The noise level is typically low to moderate. The role also requires interaction with both the public and internal team members in a professional and courteous manner. Some local travel will be required, and a flexible schedule may be necessary to accommodate business needs, including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
