What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director, Matlab, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director, Matlab, you need advanced expertise in MATLAB programming, data analysis, and leadership experience, typically supported by a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with MATLAB toolboxes, Simulink, project management software, and certifications like Certified MATLAB Associate are often required. Strategic thinking, strong communication, and team management skills help you lead cross-functional teams and drive innovation. These capabilities ensure effective oversight of complex projects, alignment with organizational goals, and successful development of MATLAB-based solutions.

What are the common challenges faced by a Director Matlab when leading technical teams?

As a Director Matlab, one of the main challenges is balancing technical leadership with strategic decision-making. You are often responsible for overseeing multiple complex projects, ensuring that teams adhere to best practices in coding and data analysis, while also aligning deliverables with organizational goals. Another challenge is fostering collaboration between cross-functional teams—such as software engineers, data scientists, and project managers—to drive innovation and maintain high-quality standards. Effective communication and mentorship are key to addressing skill gaps and promoting professional growth within your teams.

What does a Director Matlab do?

A Director Matlab is typically a senior management role responsible for overseeing teams that utilize MATLAB software for engineering, data analysis, or research projects. This role involves setting technical direction, managing resources, and ensuring the successful execution of projects involving MATLAB. Directors may also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and integrate MATLAB solutions into broader organizational strategies. They ensure that best practices are followed and that teams are up-to-date with the latest MATLAB tools and techniques.

Minimum Salary 170600
Maximum Salary 295400
What You Will Do
The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) in Nuclear Production Operations is a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists who support some of the nation's important plutonium programs including pit production, surveillance, research & development, and subcritical experiments. Our work spans across the entire Nuclear Production Operations organization and tackles complex technical challenges that directly support national security.
We are seeking an Applied Engineering Analysis (AEA) Lead (Project-Program Director 4) who brings strong technical expertise, analytical judgement, and the ability to guide and develop a highly capable engineering analysis team. The selected candidate will be a member of the PRRO leadership team and will be responsible for directing and performing detailed analyses across a broad spectrum of engineering problems from classical hand calculations to advanced, multi-physics simulations using state-of-the-art finite element tools and commercial computer codes.
You will be expected to:
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineering analysts working across mission-critical programs.
  • Perform and oversee sophisticated analytical work, selecting methods that range from first-principles calculations to high-fidelity simulations.
  • Ensure high quality results through structured peer review and comprehensive documentation.
  • Engage directly with customers and program leadership to shape analytical approaches and influence the long-term development of analysis capabilities at LANL.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and capability development across PRRO and the larger Nuclear Production Operations organization.
  • Provide final review and approval for all analytical work produced by your team.
  • Support the growth of early career engineers through mentoring and coaching.
