DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY: The Teacher's Aide is responsible for facilitating study hall sessions and homework assistance to individual clients during evening hours. Taking direction from the certified teachers of Pathway School, the aide is responsible for implementing homework plans designed to encourage mastery of subject matter, reinforce skill acquisition, and/or remediate challenging curriculum concepts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Provide direct supervision and management of client behavior in a consistent and equitable manner during study hall sessions and individual client academic interventions.
* Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents or incidents so follow-up and/or prevention can occur.
* Acknowledge and respect client rights.
* Review clients' biopsychosocial assessments and psychological evaluation data and information.
* Review the individualized treatment plan and Individual Education Plan (IEP, as applicable) for clients and provide support to each client according to the plan.
* Provide individualized attention, encouraging each client's ability to achieve to their functional ability level.
* Contribute to the care planning process by providing the Education Coordinator with specific information and observations of the clients' participation and responses to educational interventions.
* Work in conjunction with Pathway School personnel to objectively grade and report client progress for academic credit.
* Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and clean school environment.
* Maintain confidentiality of all protected health information and special education information of clients.
* Participate in staff training as directed by the Education Coordinator.
* Other duties as may be assigned by supervisors and executive staff.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Experience, and Competencies
Education: Completion of Work Keys testing or at least 2 years undergraduate degree.
Experience and Competencies: No prior classroom teaching experience required; an energetic individual with high ethical
standards and an appropriate professional image; the individual is trustworthy and able to maintain strict levels of confidentiality when dealing with clients and sensitive situations; the ability to define problems, collect data and establish facts is essential to this position; an articulate individual who can relate to people at all levels of an organization and possesses excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; has basic knowledge of the laws, regulations, and standards related to the provision of behavioral health care and special education services; classroom behavior management skills are an area of expertise for this individual. Academic Program Assistants must maintain a valid Alabama Driver License, submit to a background investigation, and complete an annual tuberculosis screening, as well as a physical health examination every three (3) years.
Language Skills: Proficient in the English language; Ability to read agency regulations; ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints from staff, clients, and family members; ability to adapt communications to clients' level of functioning.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to utilize basic mathematics skills. Ability to utilize statistical processes related to student evaluation systems.
