Director Magnetic Design Engineer information

What does a director magnetic design engineer do?

A Director Magnetic Design Engineer leads teams that design and develop magnetic components such as transformers, inductors, and electromagnets for various applications, including electronics, automotive, and energy systems. They oversee the engineering process from concept through production, ensuring that all designs meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements. Additionally, they collaborate with other departments, manage project timelines, and drive innovation in magnetic technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director magnetic design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director Magnetic Design Engineer, you need advanced knowledge in electromagnetics, materials science, and electrical engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and extensive industry experience. Proficiency with simulation tools like ANSYS Maxwell, FEMM, and CAD systems, as well as familiarity with industry standards, is essential. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills help drive cross-functional teams and innovate magnetic solutions. These combined skills ensure the effective design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge magnetic systems that meet technical and business goals.

How does a director magnetic design engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a project setting?

A Director Magnetic Design Engineer frequently works alongside teams such as product development, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure that magnetic components meet both technical specifications and broader project goals. This role often involves leading design reviews, providing technical mentorship, and aligning magnetic design strategies with production capabilities. Effective communication and coordination are essential, as the director must translate complex magnetic requirements into actionable tasks for different departments while ensuring project timelines and quality standards are met.

What is the difference between Director Magnetic Design Engineer vs Magnetic Design Engineer?

AspectDirector Magnetic Design EngineerMagnetic Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields; extensive experience in magnetic systemsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields; some experience in magnetic design
Work EnvironmentLeadership roles in R&D teams, strategic planning, cross-department collaborationDesign and testing of magnetic components, hands-on engineering tasks
Industry UsageUsed in companies developing advanced magnetic devices, electronics, and energy systemsCommon in manufacturing, product development, and engineering firms focusing on magnetic components

The main difference is that the Director Magnetic Design Engineer oversees magnetic design projects at a strategic level, managing teams and setting priorities, while the Magnetic Design Engineer focuses on the technical design and implementation of magnetic components. Both roles require strong technical credentials, but the director position involves leadership and broader project management responsibilities.

Job description

Amca is building America’s new industrial base. Since the 1990s, our ability to build new aviation and military systems and maintain the ones we already have has eroded. Today, the gap between what the nation needs to produce and what it is capable of producing is the largest it has been in generations.

To help close that gap, Amca rapidly develops and manufactures new critical components and subsystems required to build and sustain the planes, military vehicles, and core infrastructure America needs. Today, we operate seven factories nationwide, including our advanced prototyping and testing headquarters in El Segundo, and deliver avionics, hydraulic, and electrical components for platforms such as the F-35, F-16, F/A-18, 737MAX, 787, A320neo, A321, Mk-48, and M1 Abrams.

Overview

The Senior Magnetics Engineer leads the design of Amca's magnetic components and electromagnetic devices. You will design transformers, inductors, solenoids, motors, and magnetic actuators for power electronics and fluid control hardware, pairing magnetic and thermal analysis with manufacturable, high-reliability designs. This is a specialized design role for an engineer who lives at the intersection of electromagnetics, materials, and thermal performance.

Responsibilities Magnetic Design and Analysis
  • Lead the design of transformers, inductors, solenoids, motors, and magnetic actuators.
  • Perform magnetic analysis and FEA to predict flux, force, inductance, and losses.
  • Model core loss, copper loss, saturation, and thermal behavior across the operating envelope.
  • Select magnetic materials, wire, insulation systems, and core geometries.
Documentation and Data Packages
  • Produce winding specifications, magnetic component drawings, and technical data packages.
  • Author design requirements and interface control documents for magnetic assemblies.
  • Maintain design records and support configuration management.
Integration and Cross-functional Support
  • Partner with electrical, mechanical, and test teams through build and qualification.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action on magnetic design and field issues.
  • Review the work of junior engineers and mentor them on magnetics design methods.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years designing magnetic components or electromagnetic devices in aerospace, defense, or a comparable high-reliability industry.
  • Strong command of electromagnetics, magnetic materials, and thermal fundamentals.
  • Experience with magnetic FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell or comparable software.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry a magnetic design from requirements through qualification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing high-frequency magnetics for power conversion.
  • Experience with solenoid or magnetic actuator design for fluid control hardware.
  • Familiarity with DO-160 environmental qualification and relevant MIL-STD requirements.
  • Experience working across multiple manufacturing sites or factories.
Annual Salary Range

$150,000—$250,000 USD
