Position Summary

The Machine Shop Manager is responsible for leading and managing all machine shop operations in support of ship repair, overhaul, maintenance, and fabrication for critical components for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, government, and commercial vessels. This role leads a team of skilled machine shop technicians responsible for rebuilding custom parts, restoring damaged components, and developing practical repair solutions that preserve the integrity of ship repair projects. The Machine Shop Manager directly manages a team of approximately 10 to 20 employees, including supervisors and shop personnel.


Domestic and international travel may be required.


Essential Functions

  • Monitor critical ship repairs through precision repair, restoration, reverse engineering, and custom fabrication solutions to return damaged or obsolete equipment to operational service, ensuring quality and system integrity
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to support enterprise-wide ship repair planning, budget objectives, and vessel delivery timelines.
  • Manage ship repair schedules, project milestones, productivity, and quality standards to ensure work complies with engineering drawings, technical specifications, and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee equipment maintenance, preventive maintenance programs, and calibration activities while monitoring labor, material usage, and budget performance
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Must be knowledgeable on propulsion, shaft, rudder, Z drive, coolers, pumps, valves, and motors
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications
  • Must be able to apply strategic planning, risk management, and knowledge of maritime regulations and compliance requirements
  • Must have strong Microsoft Office Suite computer skills
  • Must have strong organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
  • Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMSNA and have high values for safety awareness
  • Perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Company policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; employee recognition and discipline; resolving employee concerns; and developing employees with the skills, competencies, and values needed to achieve Company goals.

Education and Experience

  • Journeyman, Technical or Associate degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 2 years of machine shop experience required, shipyard or ship repair environment preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. The employee may also be required to work in confined spaces and at varying heights. PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
