Job Description:

The Market, Financial and Licensing Systems department of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has an exciting opportunity for a Software Engineer III. This position develops and implements software applications based on evaluations of business and technical requirements, and ensures programming code is scalable and meets performance requirements. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of information requires evaluation of identifiable factors. This is a full-time remote position, in a positive and flexible environment. Residency within 100 miles of the Kansas City office is required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve data and application software problems, utilizing programming languages to access and manipulate databases.

  • Maintain systems and programs continuously by assisting user groups in problem resolution and providing technical solutions to resolve software or system logic problems.

  • Provide rationale for design decisions and mitigation of technical risks, and ensure the decisions are effectively communicated, validated, and adhered to.

  • Assess unusual circumstances and use sophisticated analytical and problem-solving techniques to identify cause, resolving a wide range of issues in creative ways and suggesting variations in approach.

  • Devise solutions based on limited information and precedent and adapt existing approaches to resolve issues.

  • Communicate and collaborate with senior internal and external partners, providing advice as appropriate, and adapting communication style for differing audiences.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Typically has a Bachelor's degree with 5 - 8 years of position related progressive professional, individual Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Computer Science or Associates Degree in Applied Science specific to Computer Science, and five to eight years related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Must have experience with the entire development life cycle: analysis, design, construction, and implementation.

  • Required experience with Java (Multithreading, Java Software Design Patterns, Functional Programming and Object-Oriented Design.)

  • Required experience with SQL.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Spring

  • Experience with Appian

  • Experience with AWS development

  • Experience with Gitlab / Git

  • Strongly prefer experience in test-driven development.

Travel:

This position does not require overnight business travel. Employees are responsible for their personal transportation to/from the home and office, including events, meetings, and training required by the NAIC.

Compensation:

$81,000 - $114,500, commensurate with education and experience.
