Associate Director of Communications and Content Strategy

GILMAN SCHOOL INC

Job description

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND CONTENT STRATEGY

OUR MISSION

Gilman is a diverse community dedicated to educating boys in mind, body, and spirit through particular emphasis upon academic excellence, athletic participation, and aesthetic appreciation. Gilman seeks to produce men of character and integrity who have the skills and ability to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

OUR COMMITMENT

Educating the Whole Boy

For more than a century, Gilman’s mission has remained exceedingly focused: to unlock the greatness within each boy by educating the entire boy—mind, body, and spirit. To accomplish that goal, we provide space and opportunity for crucial learning and self-expression to take place. We believe that boys experience transformative learning when they connect disciplines, people, and ideas in ways that deepen their sense of self and serve the needs of others.

Our rich and comprehensive program, our immeasurably talented and interesting faculty and students, and our belief in the character traits embodied by the Gilman Five—Honor, Integrity, Respect, Humility, and Excellence—combine to form the foundation of an educational environment dedicated to helping boys grow into men of character.

Community, Inclusion, and Equity

Gilman’s commitment to inclusion and equity is founded on the belief that our community is strengthened by the vibrant exchange that occurs when individuals with different backgrounds and heritages share their perspectives with one another. Through the recognition and acceptance of our many differences, we learn to appreciate and respect the complexity of the world in which we live and develop essential skills that help us forge productive relationships with those around us.

We are proud of our history as a school that has, for several generations, taken the lead on matters of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Close to 35% of Gilman’s student body and 22% of the School’s faculty identify as people of color. We continue to build on that legacy through our steadfast commitment to inclusion and equity and initiatives on local, state, and national levels.

OUR SCHOOL

Gilman School is a pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade private independent day school for boys. Set on a 57-acre campus in the northern part of Baltimore City, Gilman serves roughly 1,000 students in three divisions. The School has a full-time faculty of nearly 140, and the average class size is 16 students.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Gilman School is seeking a creative and collaborative Associate Director of Communications and Content Strategy to help bring our community's stories to life. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, this role plays a key part in developing engaging content while managing the flow of school-wide communications that inform, inspire, and strengthen connections across the Gilman community.

The successful candidate is an exceptional writer who understands how to create content that engages diverse audiences. Working closely with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni, this individual will identify stories that reflect the excellence of the Gilman experience and translate them into communications that support admissions, advancement, community engagement, and institutional priorities.

This is an on-campus, 12-month position.

  • Manage the development and distribution of schoolwide print and digital communications, including twice-monthly e-newsletters, event invitations, advertising, magazine articles, brochures, website content, and emails.
  • Craft mission-aligned copy for various audiences, including:
    • Admission materials for prospective families
    • Website articles for broad audiences, including prospective and current families
    • Feature stories for print publications distributed to alumni, current families, and donors
  • Serve as editor-in-chief and content creator for two annual print publications.
  • Distribute schoolwide communications through Finalsite, ensuring accurate audience targeting, timely delivery, and quality control.
  • Support writing, editing, and communication strategy for leadership and key offices across the school, including Admissions, Advancement, College Counseling, Community, Inclusion and Equity (CIE), and the Business Office.
  • Provide content and support to school divisions for weekly parent communications, ensuring a cohesive brand and consistent experience.
  • Conceptualize ideas, write scripts, offer direction, and provide editing feedback on videos.
  • Strategically draft and edit crisis communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Working with the Director of Marketing and Communications, develop and execute a plan that ensures Gilman’s presence in local and national conversations and publications.
    • Identify and research ideas, write content such as features, short news pieces, and profiles; pitch stories to local and national news media, and write press releases and other supporting materials.
  • Partner with the Digital Content Manager and Sports Information Director to bring these stories to life on our social media channels and school website.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • 8+ years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or marketing.
  • A master’s degree is a plus.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft copy on a wide range of topics and with different tones.
  • Creative thinker with a proactive, can-do personality.
  • Strong project management skills required — ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects, timelines, and stakeholders. Familiarity with project management platforms (e.g., Asana, Monday, Teamwork) is a plus.
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment while also being a disciplined, independent worker.
  • Eagerness to engage in the life of the school community.
  • Design experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CMS platforms such as FinalSite.

 COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

We are committed to transparency and supporting our employees' well-being. For this role, we offer a competitive salary range of $65,000-$80,000 based on experience and qualifications.

In addition to the annual salary, Gilman School offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as life insurance, critical illness and accident coverage, and both short- and long-term disability. We offer a 403 (b) retirement plan with an employer match to help you plan for the future.

We also believe in the importance of work-life balance. Our time-off package includes two weeks of paid vacation, seven sick days, a winter break, and a spring break annually. At Gilman School, you'll find a supportive environment where your health, wellness, and professional development are valued.
