Summary
The Director, Product Engineering will lead the strategy, design, and delivery of the organization’s product engineering capability, owning end-to-end software development for customer-facing and internal product platforms. This role partners closely with Product Management, Design, Architecture, and Data and Analytics teams to translatebusiness outcomes into engineered solutions and to build and scale high-performing engineering teams that ship reliable, secure, scalable, and compliant products in support of the organization’s PBM and Pharmacy operations. The role also drives adoption of modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted software engineering, reusable platform services, and data-enabled product capabilities, while ensuring governance, audit readiness, traceability, and responsible use of AI in a regulated healthcare environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Engineering Leadership:
    1. Lead end-to-end software engineering for product platforms, including web, mobile, APIs, and integrations that support PBM and Pharmacy operations.
    2. Direct daily operations of the product engineering department, establishing engineering standards, development practices, code quality benchmarks, delivery priorities, and secure AI-assisted software engineering practices that improve developer productivity, testing automation, code quality, and delivery velocity.
  • Product Delivery and Execution:
    1. Partner with Product Management to translate product roadmaps into executable engineering plans with clear milestones, dependencies, and success metrics.
    2. Drive on-time, high-quality delivery of product releases using agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and modern release management.
  • Team Leadership:
    1. Lead and develop engineering managers, senior engineers, and software developers across the product engineering organization.
    2. Recruit, hire, train, and retain top engineering talent, building a diverse and high-performing team.
    3. Mentor managers and engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Strategy:
    1. Partner with the Director of Architecture to define and execute the technical roadmap for product platforms, including platform modernization, technology selection, adoption of cloud-native patterns, and development of reusable platform capabilities, shared services, APIs, and engineering frameworks that accelerate delivery across product lines.
    2. Review and approve technical designs, system integrations, and major architectural decisions prior to implementation, including engineering patterns that support scalability, multi-tenancy, configurability, and client onboarding efficiency.
  • Quality, Security, and Reliability:
    1. Establish SLA/SLO targets, observability standards, telemetry, KPI instrumentation, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and incident response practices for production systems.
    2. Establish and enforce governance, security, and responsible AI standards for AI-enabled products and engineering practices, embedding secure-by-design principles throughout the software development lifecycle and ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other healthcare regulatory requirements applicable to PBM and Pharmacy operations.
    3. Ensure engineering processes and platforms support audit readiness, validation requirements, traceability, and compliance obligations applicable to regulated healthcare and pharmaceutical environments, while identifying delivery, technical, security, and AI-related risks and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    1. Partner with Product Management, Design, Architecture, Data and Analytics, Operations, and business stakeholders to align engineering priorities with company strategy and to ensure product platforms support enterprise reporting, operational analytics, AI/ML workloads, and data governance requirements.
    2. Communicate effectively with executive leadership on delivery progress, risks, technical trade-offs, and key engineering decisions.
  • Innovation and Transformation:
    1. Drive innovation in product engineering through adoption of new technologies, AI-assisted software engineering practices, and AI/ML capabilities that improve engineering effectiveness, customer experience, and business outcomes while promoting safe, scalable, and effective use of AI technologies across the software development lifecycle.
    2. Stay abreast of advances in software engineering, cloud platforms, and emerging technologies, evaluating their applicability to organizational goals.
  • Vendor and Partner Management:
    1. Manage relationships with offshore delivery partners, SaaS vendors, and technology partners supporting product engineering.
    2. Evaluate and onboard new development tools, frameworks, and platforms that improve engineering productivity and quality.
  • Budget Management:
    1. Own the product engineering operating budget, including labor, tooling, cloud, and platform costs.
    2. Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation across product engineering teams and major initiatives.
  • Operational Oversight:
    1. Oversee production support, on-call rotations, and operational health of product engineering systems to ensure continuous service delivery.
    2. Approve procurement of development tools, licenses, and infrastructure needed by product engineering teams.
    3. Prepare and review delivery dashboards, engineering metrics, and progress reports for leadership.
  • Documentation:
    1. Ensure comprehensive documentation of product engineering systems, APIs, runbooks, and engineering processes is maintained and accessible.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field or relevant experience. Master’s degree in a relevant discipline preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with recent hands-on leadership of modern engineering teams; relevance and recency of experience valued over total years.
  • Proven experience establishing and scaling engineering teams that leverage AI tooling across the software development lifecycle (e.g., AI-assisted coding, code review, testing, and documentation), with the ability to drive adoption, establish standards, monitor effectiveness, and ensure secure usage to accelerate delivery and improve quality.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and shipping AI-powered product features and solutions in production, including integration of LLMs, generative AI, and traditional ML models.
  • Experience delivering software products in a healthcare, pharmaceutical, or Pharmacy Benefit Management environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
