The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
Travelers Data Engineering team constructs pipelines that contextualize and provide easy access to data by the entire enterprise. As a Data Engineering Director you will accelerate growth and transformation of our analytics landscape. In this role, you will lead teams designing and building data solutions that capture, explore, transform and utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and business intelligence/insights. In addition to ingesting data from multiple sources and relaying information to relevant partners, you will also mentor and develop a team of data engineers.
This role is part of the BI Data & Analytics Organization. You will lead data engineering efforts encompassing solution design, building and optimizing data pipelines, and overseeing engineering and integration work in support of Underwriting Models and Analytics. The role requires cross-functional collaboration with Data Scientists, BI Tech Data Engineering, Data & Analytics Value Streams, and Architecture to prioritize, implement data and ML pipelines, build roadmaps, streamline processes, and standardize implementation patterns across these domains.What Will You Do?
  • Lead, guide, and coach the Underwriting Data Engineering team, establishing processes, fostering a culture of technical excellence, and supporting career development across the team.
  • Design, develop, and implement robust end-to-end data solutions and ML pipelines covering feature engineering, data preparation, training, testing, and deployment, while enforcing strong data validation, versioning, and governance practices.
  • Govern the end-to-end productionization of models, coordinating with stakeholder and application teams to ensure seamless integration with production systems and APIs, including monitoring, alerting, and error handling frameworks.
  • Lead the development of analytic data products, pilots, and proof of concepts in alignment with enterprise architecture and data strategies, while maintaining scalable, secure, and automated solutions.
  • Develop and maintain the Underwriting Analytics Portfolio roadmap, present analysis and recommendations to inform management decisions, and maintain cross-functional relationships to ensure partner needs are met and work is prioritized accordingly.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM related field or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of related experience.
  • 3 or more years of management experience, ideally with at least 2 years in the insurance industry.
  • 3 or more years of hands-on experience with AWS Cloud Services, Python, and Databricks, along with 2 or more years working with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Proficiency in SQL for data querying, transformation, and pipeline development, with experience in data governance frameworks and advanced knowledge of cloud platforms and data tooling.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and leadership levels.
What is a Must Have?
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 6 additional years of data engineering experience.
