Job description

Overview Alnylam is building an integrated commercial technology, data, and AI ecosystem to support customer engagement, patient services, analytics, and business growth. The Associate Director, Commercial Technology & Data Engineering serves as the primary engineering leader supporting Alnylam's Commercial organization. This role is responsible for the commercial data and engineering capabilities that enable commercial operations, analytics, digital engagement, and AI-driven insights.

Reporting to the Head of Data, AI & Engineering, the Associate Director partners closely with Commercial Technology leadership, business stakeholders, Platform Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, and Data & AI teams to translate business priorities into scalable technology solutions. The role leads a multidisciplinary team with an expected span of control of 6 to 12 engineers across data engineering, software engineering, platform integration, and BI, and serves as the engineering leader across Alnylam's commercial digital and analytics programs. The role will be re-evaluated as scope, delivery demand, and team size grow.

Hybrid role based in Cambridge, MA, with 3 days/week onsite Key Responsibilities Commercial Data & Engineering Strategy Define and execute the roadmap for commercial data and engineering capabilities in partnership with Commercial Technology and business stakeholders. Serve as the primary engineering leader supporting Commercial and own the interface to the IT vertical Leader for Commercial, partnering across strategy definition, solution ideation, execution and delivery. Build scalable data products and technology solutions that support Commercial Operations, Marketing, Patient Services, Market Access, and Insights & Analytics.

Commercial Data Foundation & Data Products Own and evolve the Commercial data foundation, including customer, patient, engagement, territory, and market data assets that support analytics, AI, and digital capabilities Engineer and maintain the Commercial data spine-the standardized integration and modeling layer that connects Commercial execution systems, digital engagement platforms, analytics tools, and enterprise data assets. Drive simplification and standardization by reducing point-to-point integrations and enabling reusable, scalable data products and services Data Governance & Platform Partnership Scale data governance capabilities across Commercial domains, ensuring strong ownership, data quality, cataloging, lineage, stewardship, and regulatory compliance. Partner closely with the Senior Director, Platform Engineering to build Commercial capabilities on the Alnylam Data Platform while aligning platform services, capacity planning, roadmap priorities, and delivery needs.

Partner with Enterprise Architecture, AI & Analytics, and Data Governance leaders to ensure Commercial solutions align with enterprise standards, integration patterns, capabilities, and reference architectures Ensure all commercial data and technology solutions meet pharmaceutical regulatory and privacy requirements (GxP where applicable, 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, GDPR/CCPA, MLR review) and align with enterprise governance standards (Data Governance, AI Governance Board, and the Microsoft Purview default-deny posture). Commercial Platform & Integration Leadership Lead the development and evolution of Commercial data products, integrations, and activation capabilities across the Commercial technology ecosystem. Oversee delivery of strategic capabilities including Commercial CRM, Patient Services, omnichannel engagement, consent and preference management, and governed integration of Commercial platforms into the enterprise data ecosystem.

Ensure Commercial data and technology solutions are scalable, secure, compliant, and aligned with enterprise governance standards Delivery & People Leadership Lead delivery through Agile product teams, ensuring effective prioritization, backlog management, cross-team coordination, and predictable execution across Commercial data and engineering initiatives. Manage, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team of approximately 6-12 engineers spanning data engineering, software engineering, platform integration, and business intelligence. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field; Master's degree preferred.

10+ years of progressive experience in data, software, or platform engineering, with at least 5 years leading technical teams. 4+ years building data pipelines and platform integrations for commercial functions (marketing, sales/field, commercial analytics, patient services, or market access); pharmaceutical or life sciences experience strongly preferred. Experience leading engineering teams in an Agile delivery model, including backlog management, sprint planning, dependency management, and delivery execution across multiple Agile pods; experience operating with two or more pods is strongly preferred.

Hands-on expertise with the modern data stack: Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, and cloud-native orchestration (Astronomer/Airflow) or similar. Express the willingness to keep current and drive for future outcomes via technical capability. Production experience with Patient Services / CRM platforms (Salesforce Health/Life Sciences Cloud and/or Veeva) and with CDP / activation architectures, with Salesforce Data Cloud strongly preferred (or Adobe Experience Platform / equivalent composable CDP).

Direct experience integrating the Veeva ecosystem (CRM, Vault, Network) into a cloud data platform such as Snowflake, ideally via Fivetran or comparable CDC/ingestion tooling. Experience integrating commercial data sources: syndicated data (IQVIA, Symphony), specialty pharmacy and hub feeds, claims, and HCP/HCO master data or similar. Strong software engineering fundamentals: Python, SQL, Snowflake, REST/GraphQL APIs, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code practices.

Demonstrated ability to serve as a trusted technical partner to non-technical business stakeholders, particularly across commercial and marketing functions. Working knowledge of pharmaceutical regulatory and privacy requirements (21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, GDPR/CCPA, MLR) as applied to commercial data and technology. Travel to conferences, vendor sites and other technical providers will be required but infrequent.

Preferred Experience standing up omnichannel engagement and next-best-action capabilities in a regulated pharma commercial environment. Familiarity with Patient Services / hub operations and specialty data flows. Experience with identity resolution and privacy-by-design architectures in a regulated industry.

Deep familiarity with the Veeva ecosystem (CRM, Vault, Network) and its data integration patterns. Experience with Snowflake Cortex, Streamlit or equivalent governed, enterprise-grade LLM/AI enablement. Background in real time personalization engineering, including A/B testing infrastructure and journey orchestration platforms.

Experience with multi touch attribution modeling and marketing mix analytics data products. Cloud certification (AWS Solutions Architect or equivalent); working knowledge of AWS core services (S3, Lambda). Prior experience in rare disease, specialty pharma, or biotech commercial operations.
