Job description

BBR Partners is a boutique wealth management firm providing customized investment strategies and bespoke advice to high-net-worth individuals and families. Our clients are comprised of the brightest minds in the financial and investing worlds, entrepreneurs, business owners, leaders, and influential families who entrust us with the holistic care of their fiscal well-being. The firm was founded in early 2000 and for over 25 years has nurtured our culture with talented people from diverse backgrounds who care about each other, our clients, and our collective communities. In our quest for continuous improvement, we strive to develop not only world class talent, but world class humans!

POSITION OVERVIEW

BBR Partners is hiring a Director of Data Engineering to build the analytical data foundation that powers the firm's investment, advisory, and operational decision-making. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands what it means to be embedded alongside portfolio managers, advisors, and operations teams, building the datasets and delivery mechanisms that make descriptive and predictive analytics possible across the firm.

The firm has already invested in a modern data stack (Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Fivetran). The infrastructure is in place. What we need is someone who can build high-quality, business-ready datasets and think critically about how to get analytical capabilities into the hands of decision-makers, whether that means building custom tooling, evaluating vendor solutions, exposing data through APIs and to AI agents, or standing up a modern BI layer for investment and portfolio analytics. You will manage a small team, set technical direction for data delivery, collaborate with our Advisory, Portfolio and Research Teams, and be measured on outcomes, not infrastructure.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the dbt project: model architecture, testing standards, documentation, and code quality
  • Enable descriptive and predictive analytical capabilities for Investment, Advisory, and Operations teams by building the data layer those capabilities require
  • Evaluate build-vs-buy decisions for analytical tooling, BI platforms, and data delivery mechanisms with a bias toward outcomes over custom engineering
  • Execute on the modeling, design, and delivery of canonical, analytics-ready datasets in Snowflake
  • Develop and implement patterns for exposing curated data via APIs, AI agent tooling, and modern BI platforms for investment and portfolio analytics
  • Manage and mentor a team of 3-4 data engineers / senior DBA, including hiring for open roles.
  • Design and Architect Airflow DAGs for orchestration, ensuring environment parity across prod & non-prod environments and production
  • Partner directly with portfolio analysts, advisors, and operations leaders to understand analytical needs and translate them into data products
  • Drive the ongoing migration from legacy data stores to Snowflake using incremental, demand-driven approaches
  • Establish and enforce data quality standards and certification workflows so datasets are trustworthy enough to power AI applications, client-facing analytics, and strategic recommendations
  • Integrate data from custodians, market data vendors, and third-party systems into the canonical layer

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of data engineering experience, with at least 2 years managing engineers
  • Deep, hands-on experience with Snowflake and dbt in a production environment
  • Strong proficiency with Airflow (or comparable orchestration) for pipeline scheduling and dependency management
  • Production Python experience for data automation, pipeline tooling, and scripting
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining a layered data architecture (bronze/silver/gold or equivalent)
  • Strong SQL skills, including performance optimization and complex analytical queries
  • At least 3 years working with financial services data: securities identifiers (CUSIP, ISIN, SEDOL), portfolio/position structures, fund accounting concepts, or market data
  • Experience designing data access patterns beyond traditional SQL query: APIs, data services, semantic layers, or programmatic interfaces for downstream applications
  • Comfort with Linux, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code concepts
  • Track record of delivering data products that directly enabled analytical or business outcomes, not just maintaining pipelines or infrastructure

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience embedded within or supporting investment teams at a hedge fund, asset manager, or wealth management firm (e.g., strats, quantitative analytics, research data engineering)
  • Experience evaluating and implementing BI platforms (Sigma, Tableau, Power BI) for investment or portfolio analytics use cases
  • Familiarity with CRM data (Dynamics 365), portfolio management systems (APX, Geneva), or performance reporting platforms
  • Experience building or contributing to AI/ML data pipelines, including preparing structured data for LLM-powered applications or agent frameworks
  • Experience with Azure cloud services (Container Apps, APIM, Entra ID)
  • Experience with Terraform or similar IaC for Snowflake resource management

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Opportunity to collaborate with accomplished colleagues in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment.
  • Competitive base salary and incentive compensation.
  • Company subsidized health, dental and vision insurance for employee, partner, and dependents.
  • 401K plan, Life insurance, and short & long-term disability coverage.
  • One Medical membership (covered for employee and dependents), Employee assistance program (EAP), Gym reimbursement and other wellness offerings.
  • Pre-tax transit and parking programs, Health Savings Account (HSA) and flexible spending programs for medical and dependent care.
  • Personalized development and career opportunities.
  • Flexible time off, paid parental leave, and opportunity for Sabbatical with company tenure.
  • Hybrid remote work environment, "Work from Anywhere" weeks, and casual dress.
  • New office space with a variety of perks and amenities including catered lunches and stocked pantry.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Additionally, base salary is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include discretionary bonuses, alternative incentive packages and Company-sponsored benefit programs. This position is at-will, and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
