The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a dedicated and experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Outpatient Neurosurgery team. The NP will play a pivotal role in the preoperative and postoperative management of neurosurgical patients in the outpatient setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, as well as contributing to the success of our clinical programs. This is a full-time, weekday position offering a rewarding opportunity to work alongside renowned neurosurgeons and a multidisciplinary team in a high-acuity medical center.
The Role
As a key member of our Outpatient Neurosurgery team, you will manage the preoperative and postoperative care of patients across our cranial and vascular subspecialties, including:
- Intracranial pathologies such as brain tumors and other neoplasms
- Neurovascular disorders including aneurysms, vascular malformations, and trigeminal neuralgia
- Comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic workup coordination, and perioperative optimization
- Longitudinal follow-up care and patient/family education
- Close collaboration with surgical, oncology, neurology, and allied health teams to ensure seamless, high-quality care
Beyond direct patient care, you'll serve as a key stakeholder in program success — contributing to quality improvement initiatives, coordinating care delivery processes, monitoring performance metrics, and acting as a vital liaison between staff, leadership, and external partners.
Essential Functions
Clinical Responsibilities
- In clinical collaboration with the attending physician, provides day to day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare team.
- Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted/scheduled to service/practice setting.
- Orders, obtains, and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests.
- Establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings, with MD collaboration as needed.
- Designs, orders, and documents appropriate treatment plans/plans of care including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results, with MD collaboration as needed.
- Initiates protocols/clinical pathways, evaluates the plan of care ensuring timely intervention.
- Collaborates with attending and residents .
- Presents patients in chart rounds.
Qualifications:
- Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Maryland.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by an accredited national certifying body (e.g., AANP, ANCC).
- Minimum of 1–2 years of NP experience preferred; neurosurgery, neurology, or surgical specialty experience is preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
