Job description

Position Summary

The Director of Development is Project Hospitality's senior fundraising leader responsible for implementing and managing a comprehensive fundraising program that expands philanthropic revenue, strengthens donor relationships, and supports the organization's long-term financial sustainability. Reporting directly to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), the Director of Development serves as a key member of the Advancement leadership team and is responsible for executing fundraising strategies aligned with Project Hospitality's mission, strategic priorities, and organizational goals.The Director of Development provides leadership for day-to-day fundraising operations, including major gifts, annual giving, foundation and corporate partnerships, donor stewardship, fundraising campaigns, signature events, and community engagement. Working closely with the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Development cultivates and stewards donor relationships, identifies new funding opportunities, and ensures the successful execution of the organization's advancement initiatives.The Director of Development collaborates with the Senior Development Associate and other assigned development staff such as advancement consultants, grant writers, and external fundraising partners as directed by the Chief Advancement Officer. The Director ensures that departmental activities, systems, and resources are aligned to achieve fundraising goals and support organizational growth.In partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Development supports the work of the Board of Directors' Development Committee by preparing reports, coordinating meetings, and assisting with Board engagement in fundraising and donor cultivation activities.

As a visible ambassador for Project Hospitality, the Director of Development helps strengthen the organization's philanthropic presence throughout Staten Island and the greater New York Community while fostering a culture of philanthropy across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Revenue Growth

  • Implement fundraising strategies established in partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer.
  • Lead annual giving, major gifts, foundation relations, corporate partnerships, donor stewardship, fundraising campaigns, and special events.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, foundations, corporations, and community partners.
  • Research, craft, and submit compelling proposals for private grant opportunities & competitive government RFPs
  • Compile post-award deliverables and prepare comprehensive grant reports for funders.
  • Expand unrestricted philanthropic revenue and strengthen donor engagement.
  • Establish measurable fundraising goals, utilize data to evaluate performance, and identify growth opportunities.


Advancement Operations

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Development Department.
  • Supervise and develop the Senior Development Associate and assigned development staff.
  • Coordinate the work of fundraising consultants, grant writers, and strategic partners.
  • Ensure accurate CRM management, prospect tracking, fundraising analytics, and performance measurement.
  • Strengthen departmental systems, processes, and infrastructure to support fundraising excellence.

Board & Executive Support

  • Support the Chief Advancement Officer in advancing the Board Development Committee's work.
  • Prepare fundraising reports, dashboards, presentations, and donor briefings.
  • Assist with Board engagement, donor cultivation strategies, and special fundraising initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with the Chief Advancement Officer and executive leadership on strategic fundraising priorities.

External Relations

  • Represent Project Hospitality to donors, foundations, corporations, community organizations, elected officials, and strategic partners.
  • Strengthen Project Hospitality's visibility within Staten Island and the greater New York philanthropic community.
  • Support donor communications, stewardship activities, and advancement marketing initiatives.

Required

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible nonprofit fundraising or development leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success securing and stewarding major gifts.
  • Proven experience developing relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
  • Experience managing fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, and development operations.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing multiple fundraising initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and strategic planning abilities.

Preferred

  • Experience in human services, healthcare, or a mission-driven nonprofit organization.
  • Experience with fundraising CRM systems and donor analytics.
  • Knowledge of government funding and public-private partnerships.

Compensation
