What is a direct response professional?

A Direct Response professional specializes in creating marketing campaigns that prompt immediate actions from consumers, such as making a purchase, calling a phone number, or signing up for a newsletter. Unlike traditional branding roles, direct response focuses on measurable outcomes and often uses channels like email, direct mail, and digital ads. These professionals analyze data to optimize campaigns and maximize return on investment. Their work is essential for businesses looking to generate quick, trackable results from their marketing efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a direct response marketer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Direct Response Marketer, you need expertise in copywriting, data analysis, campaign strategy, and often a background in marketing or communications. Familiarity with email marketing platforms, CRM systems, A/B testing tools, and analytics software is typically required. Strong persuasive communication, attention to detail, and adaptability help professionals stand out in crafting messages that drive immediate customer action. These skills ensure campaigns are effective, measurable, and consistently drive conversions and ROI.

How does a direct response professional typically collaborate with marketing and sales teams to optimize campaign effectiveness?

Direct Response professionals work closely with both marketing and sales teams to ensure campaigns are strategically aligned and results-driven. They often coordinate with marketing to develop compelling offers, craft targeted messaging, and analyze audience data. Collaboration with sales is key for tracking lead quality, adjusting tactics based on real-time feedback, and maximizing conversions. Regular communication and data sharing help ensure campaigns are continuously optimized for the best return on investment.

Job description

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable sexual and
reproductive health care for all people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education.
Planned Parenthood organizations serve all people with care and compassion, with respect, and
without judgment, striving to create equitable access to health care. Through health centers, programs
in schools and communities, and online resources, Planned Parenthood is a trusted source of reliable
education and information that allows people to make informed health decisions. We do all this
because we care passionately about helping people lead healthier lives.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports
the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates, which operate non-profit health centers
across the U.S. PPFA also works to educate the public on and advocate for issues of sexual and
reproductive health. Formed as the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America,
Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a separate non-profit membership organization tax-exempt under
section 501(c)(4). The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and limited electoral activity,
including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education in furtherance of the Planned
Parenthood mission.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund seek a dynamic and strategic Senior Vice President (SVP) of Federation Fundraising. The SVP reports to Chief Development Officer (CDO) Leora Hanser in the Development division of PPFA. This leader oversees the Federation Fundraising team, the primary engine for unifying national and local fundraising efforts and partnering with affiliates to maximize fundraising opportunities in service of Planned Parenthood’s mission.

The SVP is a newly created role reflecting two strategic priorities: significantly growing Planned Parenthood's fundraising through direct response and digital marketing channels, and reimagining collaborative fundraising across the federation to achieve efficiencies and deliver greater, more consistent value to affiliates of various sizes. The SVP leads a team of approximately 50 professionals. This leader will be a key thought partner to the CDO in envisioning the future of federation fundraising at Planned Parenthood, architecting a new, more integrated model that expands revenue and enables effective fundraising practices within the federation, allowing greater investments for providing access to high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care.

Planned Parenthood raised approximately $390M from all sources during FY26.

The SVP will have a proven track record of excellence in direct response and digital marketing.

Purpose:
  • Provides strategic leadership to mass market fundraising at scale and unifies all federation-facing activities to maximize the collective fundraising potential of the organization.
  • Responsible for developing a cohesive strategy for affiliate engagement, fundraising, and service delivery.
  • Oversees the Direct Response fundraising program, a key driver of both revenue and the grassroots donor base vital to the Federation’s mission.
  • Provides transformative insights into direct response fundraising strategies, driving revenue growth and efficiency while testing novel approaches to enhance donor engagement and revenue streams.
  • Creates a compelling value proposition for collaborative fundraising and provides a roadmap for the future of federation fundraising.
  • As a member of the Senior Development Leadership Team (SDLT), the SVP influences across verticals in service of a unified Development strategy and models PPFA’s values in leading the division.
Engagement:
  • Serves as the primary leader interfacing with affiliate partners and serves as the deputy to the CDO for affiliate relations
  • Partners closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a seamless donor experience across the federation.
  • Partners with SVP, Development Data, Operations and Technology to ensure technical & data strategy and operations priorities drive innovation and data driven fundraising at scale.
  • Designs and leads the strategy for collaborative philanthropy, with a focus on providing enhanced services and ensuring affiliate satisfaction with partnership, shared donor practices, development resources and support.
  • Leads with deep empathy and a proven track record of navigating complex dynamics to build trust across diverse geographical and political landscapes.
Delivery:
  • Drives integrated data driven fundraising strategies to ensure that we are maximizing the revenue growth potential of the National office and across the federation.
  • Oversees and drives a large and successful Direct Response and Digital Marketing team, responsible for generating over $230 million in revenue, with a focus on strategic growth of the program.

  • Partners with executive leadership to advance a culture that embraces change, fosters teamwork, and prioritizes belonging, ensuring the team is equipped to grow, innovate, and pivot.
  • Leads an effort to evaluate our current collaborative fundraising program in order to maximize federation fundraising.
  • Assesses internal processes and develop and implement enhanced ways of working to ensure division-wide goal planning and alignment, for enhanced performance and teamwork across departments and work structures.

  • Leads the recruitment, development, and retention of a diverse team of professionals, fostering an environment of innovation, engagement, and sustained excellence.

  • Serves as a key voice in the National Office leadership, ensuring that development perspectives inform the federation's long-term financial health and strategic pivots.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile

PPFA will consider a broad range of backgrounds. The ideal candidate will align with the following qualifications:

  • A deep commitment to Planned Parenthood’s mission and to an inclusive and equitable work environment.
