What is a direct client Java developer?

Direct Client Java Developers are professionals who work directly with the end client (the company needing software solutions), rather than through third-party staffing agencies or consulting firms. They specialize in developing, testing, and maintaining applications using the Java programming language. These developers often communicate closely with the client's internal teams to understand project requirements, deliver customized solutions, and provide ongoing technical support. Working directly with clients can lead to clearer communication, faster feedback, and more tailored outcomes for software projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a direct client Java developer?

To thrive as a Direct Client Java Developer, you need a strong grasp of Java programming, object-oriented design, and experience with frameworks like Spring or Hibernate, often supported by a computer science degree. Expertise in development tools such as Eclipse or IntelliJ, version control systems like Git, and familiarity with RESTful APIs are typically expected, while certifications like Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) can be advantageous. Effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams make candidates stand out. These skills ensure efficient development, seamless client interactions, and successful project delivery in dynamic technical environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by direct client Java developers when working on client-specific projects?

Direct Client Java Developers often need to quickly adapt to varying client requirements and legacy systems, which can present challenges in understanding undocumented codebases or integrating new features. Communication is key, as developers must collaborate closely with client stakeholders to clarify project goals and address feedback promptly. Additionally, balancing multiple project deadlines and maintaining high code quality can be demanding, especially when working in fast-paced environments. However, these challenges also provide valuable opportunities to enhance technical expertise and client-facing skills.

You will partner closely with product owners, architects, and engineering teams to design, build, test, deploy, and support production-ready microservices in an Agile environment. Success in this role requires strong software development fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and a quality-first mindset as you solve complex engineering challenges, improve reliability, and support delivery outcomes that directly impact Schwab clients.
This role also offers the opportunity to influence engineering practices across the team by contributing to code quality, test automation, deployment readiness, production support, and technical coaching. You will help identify risks early, strengthen automation and validation practices, and collaborate with others to continuously improve how the team delivers scalable, maintainable, and dependable technology solutions.

Required qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related field
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot application development and delivery
  • 3+ years of experience designing and implementing automated testing solutions, including API, integration, and end-to-end testing in modern CI/CD environments
  • Professional experience developing software solutions that align with design principles, business objectives, and production support expectations

  • Professional experience with relational databases
  • Professional experience with RESTful API development
  • Professional experience with source code repository tools, such as GitHub
  • Professional experience using automation tools such as Maven or Gradle
  • Ability to provide production support, including on-call support when necessary
  • Ability to analyze technical challenges, apply sound judgment, and deliver effective solutions
  • Ability to collaborate effectively by listening actively, communicating clearly, and incorporating feedback

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in the financial services industry
  • Experience implementing quality gates within CI/CD pipelines and supporting continuous delivery practices
  • Experience building and testing microservices in public or private cloud infrastructure
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled development tools or automation to improve engineering productivity
  • Ability to mentor or coach junior team members by sharing technical knowledge, modeling strong engineering practices, and supporting continuous learning
  • Openness to learning new tools, adapting to changing priorities, and working collaboratively in a team-focused environment

In addition to the salary range, this role is eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
