About the RoleJob Description Summary
The Toolmaker II (Contractor) is responsible for the fabrication, modification, and inspection of precision tools, fixtures, and components. This role involves performing advanced equipment setup and maintenance, using precision measurement tools, fabricating fixtures, and adhering to shop safety and best practices. The Toolmaker II will also be proficient in operating laser tracker equipment and associated software, performing dimensional measurements, and troubleshooting tooling issues.
In this role, you will fabricate and assemble jigs, fixtures, and tooling to precise specifications while maintaining a clean and organized work area. You will follow safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as you read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints, including GD&T principles. Additionally, you will maintain and repair tooling, ensuring it meets quality and performance standards, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to contribute to process optimization. You will document work performed and maintain accurate records of tooling maintenance and repairs. Proficient in operating laser tracker equipment and associated software (e.g., Verisurf, Spatial Analyzer), you will perform independent laser tracker measurements and basic toolmaking tasks under general supervision. You will set up and operate laser tracker equipment with minimal supervision, perform more complex dimensional measurements and data analysis, and fabricate and assemble tooling fixtures with increasing complexity. Furthermore, you will troubleshoot basic laser tracker and tooling issues and document measurement results and tooling processes accurately.About You

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Typically 2+ years of related experience.

  • Basic understanding of general best shop practices including PPE and shop safety requirements.

  • Ability to perform basic equipment setup and maintenance activities and display general mechanical aptitude and hand tool competency.

  • Able to use precision measurement tools and fabricate fixtures for flight and non-flight assemblies.

  • Demonstrated ability implementing 5S, FOD and ESD awareness.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification: Machinist certification or related certification.

  • Familiarity with Laser Trackers, portable CMM arm, or laser scanners.

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or toolmaking environment.

  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools.

  • Solid understanding of toolmaking processes and techniques.

  • Proficient in the interpretation of technical drawings and blueprints, including GD&T principles.

  • Experience with coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and metrology techniques.

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Good communication skills and a willingness to learn and adapt.

  • Experience with CAD/CAM software for designing and programming tooling.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues with tooling and equipment.

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and practices.

  • Strong understanding of dimensional measurement principles.

  • Experience in basic toolmaking techniques (e.g., drilling, tapping, milling).
