How much do dimensional engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for dimensional engineering in Michigan is $81,375.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $66,200.00 and $95,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dimensional Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dimensional Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and statistical analysis, typically with a degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with 3D CAD software (such as CATIA or SolidWorks), metrology tools, and quality management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure precision in manufacturing. These skills are crucial for guaranteeing product quality, minimizing defects, and maintaining manufacturing efficiency.

What is dimensional engineering?

Dimensional engineering is a specialized field focused on ensuring that manufactured parts and assemblies meet precise dimensional specifications and tolerances. Professionals in this area use advanced measurement techniques, statistical analysis, and engineering principles to control and optimize the size, shape, and fit of components throughout the design and production process. Their work helps prevent costly errors, improve product quality, and ensure components function together as intended. Dimensional engineers often collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to address any dimensional issues and enhance overall product performance.

What is the difference between Dimensional Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectDimensional EngineeringMechanical Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or related field, often with certifications in measurement or quality controlRequires a degree in mechanical engineering, often with licensure or professional engineer (PE) certification
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in manufacturing, quality assurance, and assembly environments focusing on precise measurementsIn design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing across various industries
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, automotive, and precision manufacturing sectorsWidespread across industries including automotive, aerospace, energy, and consumer products

Dimensional Engineering focuses on precise measurements, tolerances, and quality control, often working closely with manufacturing and assembly teams. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering knowledge, Dimensional Engineering emphasizes measurement accuracy, whereas Mechanical Engineering emphasizes system design and functionality.

What does a dimensional engineer do?

A dimensional engineer is responsible for ensuring the precise measurement and control of physical dimensions in manufacturing and engineering processes. They develop and apply measurement techniques, use tools like calipers and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and verify that parts meet design specifications and quality standards.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, or certain senior roles in software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including bonuses and stock options. These positions typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and often involve leadership or executive responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by Dimensional Engineers when working on large-scale manufacturing projects?

Dimensional Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring precise tolerances across complex assemblies, managing measurement uncertainty, and coordinating with cross-functional teams like design, quality, and production. On large-scale projects, they must interpret and communicate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) requirements clearly to prevent costly errors. Effective collaboration and strong problem-solving skills are essential, as unexpected deviations or tooling issues may arise and require quick, data-driven solutions.

What engineers make $200,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as aerospace, petroleum, or software engineering can earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and relevant certifications. Roles in management or with leadership responsibilities may also reach this salary level, often requiring advanced degrees and expertise in high-demand areas.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-paying engineering positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and expertise in high-demand technologies or industries.
