Job description

Position Summary:

The Police Officer performs a wide range of law enforcement duties to protect life and property, enforce laws and regulations, and support the safety and well‑being of the Dillon and Keystone communities. The position involves proactive patrols, responding to calls for service, conducting criminal and traffic investigations, preparing detailed reports, and participating in community‑oriented policing. Officers must exercise sound judgment, operate vehicles and equipment safely in all conditions, and work effectively with the public, partner agencies, and Town staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Protect life and property through enforcement of laws and regulations; proactively patrol assigned areas
  • Respond to calls for police service
  • Conduct preliminary and follow‑up criminal and traffic investigations
  • Interview involved parties, witnesses, and suspects
  • Prepare clear written reports and field notes
  • Arrest and process offenders
  • Testify in court as required
  • Perform emergency duties during adverse weather or critical incidents
  • Exercise appropriate judgment regarding use of force
  • Operate law enforcement vehicles under emergency conditions, day or night
  • Understand and apply legal documents such as citations, affidavits, and warrants
  • Direct and coordinate emergency personnel at accident scenes or disasters
  • Participate actively in community‑oriented policing efforts
  • Self‑initiate traffic or criminal investigations

    Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree in a related field highly preferred
  • Minimum age 21
  • Colorado P.O.S.T. certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferred
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain
  • Previous law enforcement or related experience highly preferred
  • Fluent verbal and written communication in English
  • Knowledge of proper firearm use and safe operation of police vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to work effectively with the public in challenging situations
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the position, including working outdoors, lifting/moving up to 100 lbs occasionally, and performing duties requiring mobility, coordination, and visual acuity
