Job description

Prepress Technician Job Profile (MPI Label Systems)

This profile outlines the typical duties, responsibilities, and necessary qualifications for a Prepress Technician at MPI Label Systems. This technical role sits at the intersection of graphic design and manufacturing, ensuring that creative files are technically sound for high-quality flexographic or digital production.

Position Overview

The Prepress Technician is responsible for preparing, manipulating, and optimizing customer-supplied artwork for the printing process. This role involves "pre-flighting" files to catch errors, applying technical printing specifications (trapping, screen values, and distortions), and creating final production layouts to ensure the labels print accurately and efficiently on press.

Functional Responsibilities and Tasks

The core functions involve file preparation, technical layout, and quality assurance:

I. File Pre-flight and Correction

  • Pre-flighting: Analyze customer-supplied digital files to identify potential printing issues, such as missing fonts, low-resolution images, incorrect color modes (RGB vs. CMYK), and insufficient bleeds.
  • Graphic Manipulation: Use Adobe Creative Suite to adjust artwork. This includes cleaning up vector paths, retouching images, and ensuring all elements comply with the specific requirements of the intended press (flexo, digital, or hybrid).
  • Technical Adjustments: Apply specific flexographic compensations, including trapping (overlapping colors to prevent white gaps during press shifts) and bar width reduction (BWR) for accurate barcode scanning.

II. Layout and Imposition

  • Step-and-Repeat: Create production layouts (impositions) by repeating the single label design across the width and length of the print web, according to the specific die-line and gear repeat provided by the scheduling department.
  • Mark Placement: Add critical production marks to the layout, including color bars, registration marks, eye-marks for finishing sensors, and job-specific identification text.
  • Distortion Application: Apply calculated "distortion" factors to the artwork to compensate for the stretching of the flexographic plate when wrapped around the printing cylinder.

III. Proofing and Plate Output Support

  • Digital Proofing: Generate accurate digital or physical proofs for customer approval, ensuring all elements of the design are present and colors are represented as accurately as possible within the proofing system's gamut.
  • Output Preparation: Prepare final, color-separated 1-bit TIFF files or PDF/VT files for output to the Computer-to-Plate (CTP) imager or the Digital Front End (DFE) of the digital presses.
  • Archive Management: Maintain an organized digital file structure, ensuring that all revised versions of artwork are correctly labeled and archived for future repeat orders.

Required Qualifications and Attributes

  • Experience: 2–4 years of experience in prepress, preferably within the flexographic packaging or label industry.
  • Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Experience with industry-specific workflow software like Esko (ArtPro+, DeskPack, or Automation Engine) is highly desirable.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of flexographic printing limitations, including minimum dot gain, line screens (LPI), and substrate-specific requirements.
  • Detail Orientation: An eagle eye for detail is required to catch minute text errors, color discrepancies, or layout misalignments before they reach the pressroom.
  • Color Theory: Solid understanding of color spaces (CMYK, RGB, Lab) and spot color (Pantone) matching.

Machines & technologies you'll use:

  • Digital Imaging Software
  • Flexographic Printing Press
