The Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL) at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLPis a leading global privacy and data policy think tank and do tank working at the intersection of law, policy and technology with a membership comprising more than 85 multinational companies across a broad range of industry sectors. CIPLโ€™s leadership and staff are globally recognized thought leaders in privacy, data and digital policy. They include former senior public and private sector professionals with extensive global and national experience in developing, interpreting, implementing, and enforcing laws, policies, and corporate privacy programs relevant to the data economy.

CIPL is looking for a Data Policy Analyst to join our team in our Washington, DC office.

Day-to-day Responsibilities Include:
  • Working closely with CIPL leadership and team members to develop strategies and implement project plans to advance CIPLโ€™s global policy agenda on a wide range of privacy, data and digital policy issues. (This includes, but is not limited to, the following topics: accountable AI; accountability-based governance; automated decisionโ€‘making; biometric data; childrenโ€™s data; crossโ€‘border data flows; cybersecurity; dataโ€‘driven innovation; data ethics; data localization; digital sovereignty; individual rights; privacy enhancing technologies (PETs); regulatory strategy, oversight and enforcement; and transparency.)
  • Supporting CIPLโ€™s leadership and team members by monitoring policy trends and developments and anticipating relevant emerging issues in connection with the above topics and summarizing and communicating findings and trends to CIPL staff and CIPL members, in policy readouts, PowerPoint presentations and reports.
  • Conducting research for and drafting regulatory comments, white papers, issue briefs and articles.
  • Planning and delivering together with the CIPL team virtual and inโ€‘person events to socialize CIPLโ€™s global policy agenda and advance CIPL member projects.
  • Managing evolving workloads and deadlines with adaptability and proactive communication.
  • Seeking opportunities for and helping to manage collaboration with CIPL member companies, think tanks, academics, industry groups and policy influencers to advance CIPLโ€™s policy agenda.
  • Helping strengthen relationshipswith current CIPL members and recruiting new CIPL members.
  • Developing materials for CIPL and nonโ€‘CIPL events, and taking an active role, including by speaking and representing CIPL at these events, as well as supporting leadership and senior team members in their speaking engagements.
  • Assisting with special projects relevant to CIPLโ€™s mission and CIPL members.
About You โ€“ you will have:
  • Superb writing, analytical, and communication skills and the ability to synthesize and present complex information and concepts in a clear and persuasive way.
  • Excellent knowledge of global policy environments in relation to privacy and broader data and digital issues.
  • Ability to conduct and lead research on emerging laws and policies relating to privacy and data protection, data use and governance, AI, and cybersecurity, as well as on related organizational best practices and factual developments.
  • Strong understanding of dataโ€‘driven innovation and technology trends and/or cybersecurity trends.
  • Exceptional time management, ability to work on multiple tasks and projects, and proactive problemโ€‘solving skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to take initiative and thrive in a dynamic and fastโ€‘paced working environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial spirit and eagerness to learn and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent business acumen, understanding of the global corporate environment and practical knowledge/experience in data protection compliance and implementing a privacy management program.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education:JD degree or Master of Public Policy degree required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience (e.g., inโ€‘house, professional services firm, law firm, think tank, trade association, government, regulatory agency or legislative staff).
  • Excellent knowledge of global privacy, data and digital laws and policy, and regulation of emerging technologies.
  • Strong understanding of the US federal and state legislative/regulatory process.
  • Experience writing public consultation responses, white papers or articles on issues related to data policy.
Additional Interests, Experience or Qualifications:
  • Computer science and/or data analytics.
  • Competition law, intellectual property law, and/or regulatory compliance.
  • International trade policy.
  • Existing track record of collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.

The expected salary range for Washington, DC based employees is $87,300 โ€“ $110,000, though salaries for employees based outside of Washington, DC may differ. Beyond an employment candidate's physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, training and/or experience.
