What are the typical career growth opportunities for a digital modeler?
Digital Modelers often start in entry-level positions focused on asset creation, but there are clear paths to advance into senior modeling, lead artist roles, or even supervisory positions within art or production departments. As you gain experience, you could also specialize in areas such as character modeling, environment design, or technical modeling for sectors like film, gaming, or industrial design. Many Digital Modelers expand their careers by learning adjacent skills like texturing, rigging, or animation, increasing their versatility and value to employers. Ongoing portfolio development, industry networking, and engagement with the latest modeling technologies can further accelerate advancement in this dynamic field.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital modeler?
To thrive as a Digital Modeler, you need experience in 3D modeling, a strong understanding of design principles, and typically a degree in digital art, industrial design, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, or ZBrush—as well as knowledge of digital sculpting and rendering techniques—is crucial, and specialized certifications can be advantageous. Attention to detail, creativity, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively are important soft skills. These skills ensure high-quality digital assets, efficient project workflow, and seamless teamwork within multidisciplinary environments.
What does a digital modeler do?
A Digital Modeler creates 3D models of characters, environments, or products for use in films, video games, and other digital media. They use specialized software like Maya, ZBrush, or Blender to sculpt and refine detailed assets based on concept art or real-world references. Their work is crucial in animation, visual effects, and product visualization, ensuring that models meet both artistic and technical requirements.

Job description
About FlightSafety International
FlightSafety International is the world’s premier professional aviation training company and supplier of flight simulators, visual systems and displays to commercial, government and military organizations. The company provides training for pilots, technicians and other aviation professionals from 167 countries and independent territories. FlightSafety operates the world’s largest fleet of advanced full-flight simulators and award-winning maintenance training at Learning Centers and training locations in the United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom.
Position Overview
FlightSafety Defense Corporation is gearing to become a recognized integration partner and solution provider for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy in the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) and Simulator Common Architecture Requirements and Standards (SCARS) ecosystem. The JSE Mission Modeler is a key contributor within the JSE/SCARS line of efforts, responsible for designing, building, and executing military mission scenarios that support large-force virtual training and mission rehearsal within the JSE Technical Baseline (JTB).
This role directly supports FSI Defense's pursuit of modular and scalable simulation architectures capable of supporting 100+ player exercises within a shared synthetic battlespace. The right candidate brings hands-on experience with military scenario authoring, constructive simulation frameworks, and the operational knowledge needed to produce tactically credible training events across multiple classification levels and platform types.
Key Responsibilities
The JSE Mission Modeler designs and develops mission scenarios for large-force virtual training exercises within the JSE synthetic battlespace. This includes building scenario content that integrates blue air, red air, constructive forces, and environmental conditions using JSE-compatible tools, behavior scripts, and constructive simulation frameworks.
The Mission Modeler authors and maintains scenario behavior files, Lua-based launching scripts, mission planning configurations, and scenario control logic in accordance with JSE Platform Package (JPP) standards. The role requires close coordination with JSE GRID services — including entity state management, sensor services, weapon interactions, and line-of-sight services — to produce high-fidelity, repeatable training events.
The JSE Mission Modeler works with Government program offices, aircrew subject matter experts (SMEs), and simulation engineers to translate operational training requirements into executable synthetic environment scenarios. This includes supporting scenario validation events at JSE facilities, participating in test events at government sites such as JITTC-E (Elmendorf AFB), NAWDC (Fallon NAS), and Digital Test and Training Range (DTTR) locations, and supporting debrief analysis.
The role supports the development and maintenance of scenario libraries across multiple mission profiles, platform types, and force ratios, with particular attention to scalability for multi-site training environments and secure multi-level security (MLS) operations across networks. The Mission Modeler also contributes to scenario documentation, supports Requirements Verification Report (RVR) activities, and maintains traceability between scenario design artifacts and applicable JSE and SCARS standards.
Travel to Government test events, contractor facilities, and operational training sites is anticipated throughout the year.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, operations research, computer science, or a closely related technical discipline; advanced degree preferred
- 5 or more years of experience in military mission scenario development, constructive simulation, or distributed synthetic environment operations in a DoD context
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with military scenario authoring tools and constructive simulation frameworks (e.g., AFSIM, JSAF, EADSIM, OneSAF, NGTS, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with distributed simulation protocols including HLA, DIS, or TENA, and experience connecting scenario entities to a networked synthetic environment
- Understanding of JSE architecture, GRID services, and the JSE Platform Package (JPP) structure, including behavior files, Lua scripting, and entity state message formats
- Operational knowledge of U.S. Air Force or U.S. Navy aviation tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), sufficient to author tactically credible training scenarios
- Experience supporting large-force exercises (LFEs) or virtual training events with 50 or more players in a live, virtual, or constructive (LVC) environment
- Strong technical writing and communication skills, with experience producing scenario documentation, test plans, and after-action reports (AARs)
- Active Secret clearance; ability to obtain Top Secret/SCI clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience working within the JSE ecosystem, including familiarity with GRID services, the Government Simulation Interface (GSI) SDK, and JSE Technical Baseline (JTB) components
- Experience with multi-level security (MLS) simulation environments and cross-domain scenario operations
- Familiarity with SCARS Increment 5 standards, including the SCARS Architecture Standard and DevSecOps Process Standard
- Experience with the Weapon System Trainer Common Environment (WSCE) and standard munitions modeling workflows
- Proficiency in Lua, Python, or C++ for scenario scripting, automation, and data analysis
- Familiarity with MBSE methodologies and SysML-based modeling tools used in JSE program documentation
- Prior experience supporting Government program offices, including AFLCMC, PMA-205, or JSE Program Office activities
- Experience with debrief system integration and training effectiveness analysis
Why This Role
The JSE Mission Modeler sits at the intersection of operational military knowledge and advanced simulation engineering — a combination that is rare and highly valued in the JSE ecosystem. This individual will directly shape the quality and tactical fidelity of training scenarios that FSI Defense delivers as part of the DIU All Players initiative and future JSE-connected programs. As FSI Defense establishes itself as a recognized integration partner for the USAF and Navy, the Mission Modeler will have early visibility into some of the most strategically significant training system programs in the Department of Defense.
