A part-time library associate opening is available at the Middletown Library!
At the MidPointe Library System, our mission is to enrich our community through access and experiences. We do that by connecting a curious community to our library services and strive to provide a positive learning experience.
At our Middletown Library, our associates provide our patrons with excellent customer service at one of the service desks by answering questions; giving reading recommendations; providing computer and printer assistance;creating library cards; assisting patrons with check in and check out; and giving instruction on how to use the online card catalog, the Internet, print station, e-reader tablets, library research databases, and other digital resources. You'd also process holds and reserves; look up materials; sort; shelve; shelf read; pull holds; and use lists to pull materials. As a member of the public services team, you'd work independently, work with co-workers, assist with branch activities, and act as person-in-charge when the supervisor or manager is not available.
Requirements
To be successful you:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be friendly, approachable, and provide a positive experience to patrons
  • Must have excellent customer service, a strong service ethic, excellent problem solving skills, adapt rapidly to change, learn new skills and processes, be adept at filling in at each service desk & the call center, and thrive in a busy environment
  • Must have computer experience that includes MS Office, the Internet, and ideally the library catalog & research databases.
  • Need to be able to independently (and with others), quickly, and favorably & with composure respond to new or changed responsibilities and/or situations and customer issues, and be able to prioritize and handle confidential information
  • Have a good knowledge of literature that appeals to children, teens, and adults
  • Must be able to identify and assist with the diverse needs of our patrons experiencing such things as homelessness or unemployment.
  • Must be able to learn and carry out the essential responsibilities of the position
  • Must be able to effectively read (including cursive), write, speak, and understand English
  • Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate library equipment including the conveyor belt check-in system
  • Must have the ability to move crates that could weigh up to 75 pounds when full, and move book carts that could weigh up to 200+ pounds when they are full
  • Must be able to work in areas that contain disinfectant odors, dust, and other possible allergens
  • Regular and predictable physical attendance and punctuality is required
