What is a digital ink?

Digital Ink jobs typically involve working with technologies that capture, process, and render handwriting or drawing input from digital pens or styluses on devices like tablets, touchscreens, or interactive whiteboards. Professionals in this field may develop software for handwriting recognition, digital note-taking apps, or tools for artists and designers. These roles can span software development, UI/UX design, product management, and technical support, depending on the specific application of digital ink technology. As digital ink becomes increasingly integrated into education, design, and productivity tools, demand for experts in this area continues to grow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital ink specialist?

To thrive as a Digital Ink Specialist, you need expertise in digital illustration, graphic design, and familiarity with drawing software, often supported by a degree in art, design, or a related field. Proficiency with tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and digital tablets (e.g., Wacom) is essential. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication set top professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure high-quality digital artwork and seamless collaboration with clients or creative teams in fast-paced design environments.

What are some common challenges faced by digital ink specialists when working on collaborative design projects?

Digital Ink specialists often work closely with graphic designers, UI/UX teams, and developers to create visually compelling and interactive content. One common challenge is ensuring consistency in style and quality across different platforms and devices, as digital ink can render differently depending on hardware and software. Additionally, balancing creative vision with technical constraints, such as file size limits and responsiveness, requires effective communication and adaptability. Collaborating efficiently with remote teams and keeping up with rapidly evolving digital tools are also important aspects of the role.

E Ink Corporation is the global leader in electronic paper technology, transforming the way people access information through innovative, low-power display solutions. Our technology is used worldwide in eReaders, electronic shelf labels, digital signage, transportation displays, wearable devices, and a growing range of Internet of Things applications. At E Ink, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement are at the core of everything we do. We foster an inclusive and supportive work environment where diverse perspectives are valued, employees are empowered to grow, and teams work together to solve complex challenges. If you're passionate about innovation and want to help shape the future of display technology, we'd love to hear from you.
THE ROLE
E Ink is looking for a hands-on engineer to help build, maintain, and improve the custom instruments and measurement systems used to develop next-generation E Ink display technologies. This role is central to the mission of advancing electrophoretic display technologies by developing cutting edge instruments to characterize and understand all components of electrophoretic display systems and their interactions.
The primary focus of this position is hardware and instrumentation. You will support both new instrument development and existing equipment used by R&D and product development teams. Prior experience in the display industry is not required. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong hands-on experience in electronics, test systems, automation, embedded systems, electro-mechanical systems, or scientific instrumentation. You will join a lean, highly collaborative research team where individual contributions are visible and important. This is a practical, build-oriented role for someone who likes solving real problems in the lab.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Maintain existing and develop new electro optical tests and instruments, including hardware, control electronics, and automation software to support R&D and product development across global teams
  • Work with scientists and engineers to understand test needs and translate them into practical hardware and measurement solutions
  • Develop or modify automation software and scripts for instrument control, data collection, and repeatable testing
  • Initiate, direct, and execute research of drive schemes, including hardware, for performance optimization and new product development
  • Design and execute electro-optical experiments to characterize display performance
  • Work with and contribute to an agile, inspiring and supportive team to rapidly advance project goals and actively pursue contingency plans
  • Create and document intellectual property

  • Proficiency with electronic laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators, soldering equipment, power supplies etc), along with data analysis and test automation tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to debug complex systems that integrate hardware, software, electronics, sensors, cabling, fixtures, and mechanical components.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience will be strongly considered
  • Self-directed, motivated, and hands-on personality. Ability to work in a fast-paced, open-minded highly interdisciplinary work environment. Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills. Experience supporting internal users of lab instruments or production-like test systems
  • Preferably, experience with soft materials such as polymers and colloids, and their electrical properties

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The anticipated annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000, not including variable pay. The final offer will be based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, skills, qualifications, and geographic location.
